Didn't Fergie always budget for 100 goals to have a shot at the title? That's why buying even the best keeper and defence can still land you finishing behind a side with a couple of magical attacking players. Lookman Barkley Davies all look like they have a goal in them but need to be chipping in regularly. Barkley needs to follow in Lampard footsteps if we are going to realistically get to title level.

To have a one off challenge you would need the top teams to all have a poor year like last season. If you took Chelsea out of it this year we would be 11 points off now, maybe only 5 or 6 points off being considered in the title race. That isn't much considering we had 2/3 dreadful months.. 5 or 6 points could surely be bridged with one more year of building under Koeman alone, especially with couple more quality signings and a bit of luck.
To challenge regularly without relying on other teams being poor we would need 5 or 6 top class players and to keep building on that every year!

Also the mindset of supporters, we have been conditioned to being little old Everton by Moyes and anything above 6th is amazing.
I saw we were linked to that Belgian midfielder earlier in the week and I saw comments online like "what about Davies/McCarthy/Gana/Schneiderlin/Besic etc etc." If he's better than them, sorry lads, move aside.
One thing Martinez did right was talk about arrogance and reminding the club who we used to be and what we should be again.
Back to original post, 2 x CB, Quality forward, maybe two depending on Rom. ANYBODY else who would improve the core of around 16-18 players, we have to have our hat in the ring.
Neither do I. For example, looks at Spurs side and compare it with our own and you'll see a stark difference in their real strength in depth.
Arguably, that's even before comparing their starting XI like to like with our own; we need much more quality in numerous positions to compete.
There's a number of positions in our starting XI that need improving and some of those demoted to the bench would still need improving.
And then there's the elephant in the room with regards to how we rely purely on one quality striker - we need a number of options here.

But our mindset is based on an accurate assessment of where we are as a team and a club. We think anything above 6th is amazing because it is amazing at the moment. Finishing top four would be a brilliant achievement for now, and it would remain that way whether 100,000 people turned up in town to celebrate it or whether we all folded our arms, pursed our lips and said it wasn't good enough.
Do you think Liverpool fans have a small time mentality? Do they hell, they think they're god's gift to football but a fat lot of good it's done them recently. Arsenal fans are the same, they moan constantly that their club isn't where it should be, but nothing changes.
It's the same with the players, they'll only believe they can win every game when they start winning every game. If they go out and play to the best of their ability but get turned over by a better side, they're not going to have the mentality that they can't be beaten - because they know they can. The best teams have a winning mentality and a swagger because they're the best teams, they're supremely confident that if they play well they'll win.
The fact is, there's a correlation between the quality of players available to a team and where they finish in the league, and no matter where the fans think the club should be, they'll only achieve what they're capable of achieving. And yes I know all about Leicester before somebody mentions it, but the very fact that you have to mention them just hammers home the point - they are the exception that proves the rule.

Would be a joy to watch Everton if Barkley started scoring at Lampard levels. To be honest there is no reason why Barkley and Lukaku could not do the same for us as Lampard and Drogba did for Chelsea.

Although I'm not altogether convinced by the back up for harry Kane
I agree to an extent. Janssen who they bought in the summer has been nothing short of unconvincing and that's certainly being kind to him.
However Son Heung-min, who isn't top class by any stretch of the imagination, has had a decent return this season and shouldn't be disregarded.
Either way both the options above are arguably better than the options we've had to replace Rom as of late in the form of Koné and Niasse.
