We're upgrading to a new server.

It costs us a little more but needs must - mod efforts to ban more people to reduce server load isn't enough...

For the techies out there, we're moving from a HP ProLiant DL360 G7 to a HP ProLiant DL360 G8.

I'll use this thread to update - it should be pretty seamless but I'm expecting some niggles.

Playing devils advocate here a bit, but if we were to opt for better written forum software (XenForo is horrible in the back) - would you need such power?

We moved to XenForo originally, from vBulletin because of its performance. When we were struggling with resource to maintain GOT on vBulletin, XF was recommended by the biggest forum host in the world.

I ran tests vs IPB, phpBB etc and XenForo took the piss comparatively. Per user, and all considered, XF is currently a non negotiable really.

Hmm, that's strange. I co-administrate an large forum (around 400 active members on average) that uses phpBB without any issues - and that's on something small and light.

Most issues are down to Apache when it comes to "poor performance" from my experience. That and outdated versions of MySQL.

My first forum was on phpBB - as was GOT at one stage - I think it's grim mate. Each to their own!

Market share wise, phpBB used to dominate but I think there's a reason XenForo/IPB dominate market share.

The problem we tend to have is spike traffic - we can comfortably handle 2000 simultaneous connections but the odd spike can flood us so we're needing a bit extra capacity.

XF has been a great upgrade from a user experience. (Except for Rep)

In the old days it felt like this place was held together with bubble gum and duct tape when it got even slightly busy.
