Dirty lad, what's so "special" about games against those teams (apart from a local derby)?

That epitomises the small time outlook that sees 7th as ok.

From where we finished in the last 2 seasons 7th would be a massive leap forwards, particularly when we compare the points tally needed to attain it, compared to the last 2 years totals.

The top 6 have all turned up this season. The 2 oil clubs, United have Mourinho and have spent a fortune, The RS have Klopp and he's done very well with what he's got, Spurs should have won the thing last season and Arsenal are perennial top 4 finishes. Which of those should we be seeing off at this point in our development exactly? Don't come back with some claptrap about ambition either, it's about context, and we came into this season off the back of being a bottom half side for 2 years.

Care to answer the question about the top 4 now?

Top 4: I expect us to challenge for that each season. You should too shouldn't you?

This ^^^ is the exact type slippage I was referring to earlier in the thread: that we now just settle for a pat on head as best for the rest like we did in the Moyes days.

The exact reason why something has got to give on this forum. Sick of having to trawl through 20 odd pages of crap between Dave wumming when his opinion on Martinez was polar opposite and the usual suspects biting to his crap.

1 party needs to cease or hopefully Dave gets a job that takes up his time from posting constant bait.

Same hahaha. If you just laugh at and mock him he completely gives up, if everyone on the forum just took that approach we wouldn't have to deal with all this.

So you seriously think that our realistic EXPECTATION (the word you used) at the start of this season was to crack the top 4 - after 2 consecutive 11th place finishes? lol

The rest of that is just meaningless deflection, you've not challenged a word I said, as you obviously can't structure a reasoned argument against it, that'll hold any water.
 

Quite a few changes in the last few weeks. Obviously 3 at the back gets the best from Baines and Coleman, but also pushing Kev upfront gives Rom more space and also allows Barkley to play as a #8 rather than #10. Put that with Davies and Holgate in the team instead of Jags and Cleverley, and the emergence of Robles as a genuine first choice then things are looking up.
 
Look, I have no interest in falling out with others over Koeman. I've readily admitted that I dont like the feller and I see him falling short of being what I call Everton class in terms of his conduct here so far, but I've been very realistic and fair in any assessment of what we should demand from him this season and the following ones.

  • The recent upturn results are to be welcomed. They offer a glimpse of what might be (though tempered by a nagging doubt that the players themselves are in 'non-pressurised' mode and that's had an effect too)

  • Similarly the upturn in performance is noted. These players are not the wastrels that many were all too eager to portray them as. They can play - no question of that. The general standard of play all season has been pretty dire, so anything like the last three weeks or so is encouraging.

  • His purchases look to be ok for the most part. Gueye especially so, he is doing exactly what McCarthy did in his first season - giving us a presence and energy in midfield. Lookman looks like he has good potential. Schneiderlin is good (but not a crucial buy for us, imo). His purchase of Bolasie looks a terrible waste of funds though.

  • The early exits in the cup are a big negative because they not only take away our dreams for another season, they also take away pressure and competition amongst the squad for a first team place. That needs a big improvement on next season.

  • We're 7th and looking like we'll show a clean pair of heels to the other teams chasing an outside European place in behind the pack of six ahead. It's important we emerge out of that ruck of mediocrity and we are doing so. That is a big merit that goes to Koeman. That wont be enough next season though.

FWIW that's where I stand on Koeman, and I think it's a lot healthier than handing him a free pass to say or do what he pleases or achieve/underachieve how he wants - which seem to be at the heart of some posters views on him. Never ever forget this feller is lucky to be here at Everton, it's NOT the other way around.
 
The aim at the start of every season should be to win every competition we're in.

Realistic expectations are a very different thing. Realistic expectation for this season to be pushing for a European spot? Doesn't sound too outlandish to me

If you're expecting us to be challenging for top 4 this season then you're being unrealistic imo. As was said a few pages ago, context is important. Back to back bottom half finished followed by a champions league placed finish is a tall order
