Gibson and Barry are not the future, but McCarthy,Besic, Barkley and Gana can all still be part of the future here with Davies and the new signing from United (who's name I can't spell).

Don't mind the odd cameo from Barry next season, seems a good character to have around the younger players.

If we have ambitions of being in Europe and playing 50+ games next season, then 6/7 central midfield players is not too many.

I like McCarthy but he's not getting a look in against Gueye, Scheniderlin, Besic, Davies.

A player who deserves playtime but such is the competition in the midfield, I'll think he'll be finding a new club.

No, not yet.

He deserves a chance still.

If he comes back and breaks again, well, but currently, theres a glimmer.

I see your point about him not "getting a look in" if Gana, Schneiderlin and Davies are fit and firing, but I would think he is further up the pecking order than Besic.

Besic and McCarthy will both be gone by the start of next season. Whether we get rid of McCarthy this window depends on who else we sign now.

I had a beer or three a little while ago with an old mate who really is in the know, he lives abroad but has put money into Everton through sponsorship and is very reliable (when I can get hold of him). He said at the time that they had very high hopes for Besic, really rated by everyone at the club and though he was very homesick at that time the club wanted to stick by him. Undoubted ability but some players just seem more prone than others, will his career ever take off?

Co,es down to two questions: How many central midfielders do we need now?(not many) How many will we need in the future? (hopefully we are involved in more matches).

Locks for next season:

Gueye
Schneiderlin
Barkley (I am assuming we play more of a 3-5-2 as this past weekend shows)
Davies

This leaves

Barry
McCarthy
Besic

I think Barry will see out his contract (1 more year), but I think/hope he will be relegated to a more elder statesman role and will only play in cup matches and as injury cover.

Besic could be sold, but I think he plays how Koeman likes and with his injuries you won't get much for him. He is worth the risk of putting on the squad and hoping he has a healthy year.

McCarthy has shown this season (Arsenal, Liverpool, end of the city match) that he does provide something to the team and I do think Koeman likes what he brings to the table and would like to keep him. However, I don't think he would be a starter and at his age I don't think hed be satisfied playing in a subs role. You also would be able to get the most money for him.

I think McCarthy is the most likely to be sold and he makes the most sense. While a summer deal may be the when this happens, since we are out of the cups and the emergence of Davies, I think we can afford to let him go at the end of the winter window if teams can pay the appropriate price (20M+). Newcastle does make a good amount of sense. They do pull in a massive amount of revenue and seem favorites to go up. So I don't think McCarthy would mind doing 4 months in the championship and being closer to home (I assume he still thinks of Scotland as home), rather then going to a PL club this window that looks more likely to be going down.

Once we barely had any central midfielders, now I can't even count how many we have.

Gibson needs out. Can't decide between Macca or Besic.
