Ronald Koeman believes Everton are better equipped for the January transfer window than last summer thanks to Steve Walsh’s work as director of football and his own assessment of the squad.

Everton endured a frustrating summer in the transfer market when, despite landing Idrissa Gueye, Yannick Bolasie, Ashley Williams and Maarten Stekelenburg, they were unable to secure deals for players such as Moussa Sissoko, Lucas Pérez, Kalidou Koulibaly and Manolo Gabbiadini.

Walsh’s late arrival from Leicester City as Everton’s first director of football, on 21 July, impacted on transfer business, along with Koeman’s desire to assess players at his disposal following his move from Southampton. With that task complete, and Walsh overhauling Everton’s scouting network, the manager insists the objectives for January are clearly defined.

“You need always time to see the qualities in the squad,” said Koeman, whose team play at Leicester City on Boxing Day. “You need to learn about the characters in the team. You need to see the balance in the team and of course my opinion about the team is a little bit different than it was after watching clips of Evertonfrom last season because I have had time to work with the individual players.

“It’s all about characters, strengths, weaknesses, what the team needs, more personalities, more key players. And finally you make your mind up. Of course we had more time now for January than we had in the summer. Steve is in for a few months, new people in, new scouting. We are better prepared now than it was in the summer.”

Napoli’s Gabbiadini remains a potential target for January along with the Manchester United pair Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay. Koeman admits he expects Everton will be more active than is usual in January.

He added: “If I compare to Southampton, I like to do more business now in January than we did in Southampton. But that’s all about what we need. We will lose Gueye to the Africa Cup of Nations. We have a long term injury in Bolasie. We have the physical problems with injuries of James McCarthy and we know Gareth Barry cannot play games every two or three days. We have Phil Jagielka in a tough period. We have a lot to think about what’s the best 11 and what’s the most fresh 11 players.”

I'm happy hes mentioned Jags here

2 cm's, a cb, a winger, a striker.

That'll be the 5 he wants in, and all will be first team quality.
I'd swap one of the central midfielders for the notoriously difficult to find playmaker, as it's another aspect we're missing in the spine of the team.

Yes Gueye is off to the ACON but if we get a quality addition who'd partnership McCarthy in the short term, then Barry or Davies could cover.

We desperately need someone to act as the catalyst behind the forward, link up our play and manage the tempo; it's glaringly obvious to see.

My hope is we go for Dzagoev mate, he can play that creative roll from the number 10, or from wide and can play equally well in the centre mid as well, he's basically been the playmaker for CSKA and the Russian National team for the past few years and done great as it.

Bring him in and let him play alongside Schneiderlin in the centre mid till Gana is back from ACON then can adjust

For the rumoured 15m Euros you won't get better at that price, from deep he does brilliantly at getting forward as well and would give us that missing link between the mid and Lukaku

Interesting Steve Walsh piece.

“Whichever owner I work for, I will spend the money as if it is mine and I don’t want to waste it. There will be another meeting with Farhad and (chairman) Bill Kenwright before the window opens and there is regular dialogue, which is good. They will invest in the right player.”

Everton’s need for more firepower was highlighted in last week’s 1-0 Merseyside derby defeat by Liverpool and is a priority, while Manchester United duo Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay are targets.

Koeman knows both players well and Walsh offered an insight into his relationship with the Dutchman.

“We both have to agree for a player to come. If one of us says no we knock it on the head,” Walsh says. “I think I have a good relationship with Ronald. He is very driven, to the point, says it how it is and I like that. If it is a no, it’s a no.”

Walsh’s eye for a player was sharpened during his time as a senior teacher and head of PE at Bishop Rawstorne Church of England Academy in Lancashire, when he oversaw five teams and would cycle round the various pitches.

Since arriving in July he has reviewed Everton’s scouting operation, made key appointments at youth level, including former midfielder Tony Grant, and assigned people he knows to cover each of Europe’s top five leagues.

“There are not many players in Europe I don’t know about,” he says. It is that knowledge Everton will hope to now benefit from."
