Second Half Performance

No point in running around in the first half if they're knackered in the second and create nothing more than a half chance header for Mori.

The second half was the equivalent of babies trying to walk for the first time. Couldn't control a ball. Couldn't pass a ball without giving it to a red shirt. Not one decent counter attack for all that sitting back.

Barkley was complete crap. Nothing worked for him. Lukaku couldn't hold the ball up. Valencia was a headless chicken.

Gueye, Coleman and McCarthy aside, the rest should feck off.

That is what I thought.

And that being the case, it has to be down to the manager surely.

What kind of a training regime is in place if the players are shattered after half an hour.....it wasn't even the whole first half

We train how we play is the mantra I believe.

I can't accept the lack of fitness at this level. It's the one thing that could have seen a visible improvement since Martinez, but it seems we are literally standing still. Just one of a mounting list of concerns whilst some folk think that all will be well by the end of January. Sorry but things look bleak from where I am.

Really...respect your opinion but for me he lost 8/10 duels against a defence that physically should not get near him. When under the cosh our "get out" ball simply bounced off him. A goalscorer yes a complete centre forward he is light years away.
I thought so, it wasn't his day but he tried.

It wasn't a lack of effort as much of a forced change in tactics because of Barry not being able to cover the same ground as McCarthy. If we stepped up as high as we did in the first half Barry would have been exposed by Lallana, Wijnaldum and Mane and it would have turned into a Martinez type defensive display without the attacking output to match it.

I agree, to bring Barry on against their attacking players was at best incompetent, but that doesn't excuse 10 professional footballers that can't string three passes together and just lumped it up the pitch. They all should be ashamed of themselves including the manager.

It is difficult to string passes together against a high press like Liverpool's when you can't win it anywhere but your own penalty area. At that point it has to stick up top which didn't happen or you have to clear and quickly press up which couldn't happen because of the problem of having Barry and not being able to do it. So those problems all start with the same root of the lack of midfield athleticism killing our press

...can we have a thread about the first half performance? I thought we had a match thread, perhaps we only talk about the first half in that one.

Never a thread policeman when you want one.

I agree that the Barry sub was incompetent knowing their game but we didn't even try and keep the ball. To play against a pressing team you require movement off the ball to make space. Our whole plan was to blindly hoof the ball up field, hope lukaku controls it turns, takes on three players and scores.
