Ronald Koeman discussion

I'd be annoyed as well if that were the case (as in not getting close to being an established top-four challenger within 5 years), but I also don't expect Rom to be here for that duration...

I honestly don't see that he's said he wants to move. He has just acknowledged that it will be hard to keep hold of Rom (which we all knew) and that Rom has the potential to be one of the world's best (which we all say)...

He hasn't said he has to leave Everton soon, or that he even should. But he has admitted that the lad will eventually move on if he is to fulfil his potential, just as Bale, Ronaldo, Suarez and countless others have done.

And he has had that tact. But similarly, what's wrong with saying to Rom - 'you can be one of the world's best, you do have that potential'?

Agreed.

So why didnt he just say that? Ideally he would say something along the lines of "Rom has all the talent in the world and could play for any club who regularly competes for trophies. My job is to ensure that Everton becomes one of those clubs and hopefully he can realize all his ambitions with us."

Does the same thing but without talking down the club he is the manager of.

He has said something without thinking in my opinion. Its not the end of the world, results on the pitch will make these comments disappear pretty quickly but he has put himself and the club under a bit of pressure now. For an experienced person like Koeman that's a bit naive of him.

He could have just said 'Lukaku is a very ambitious young player, which is good to see. We need more players and winners like him. I hope we can be successful and keep him happy, but anything can change in football. He has to improve and keep working hard. We want the best players to be at our club'. Instead he said Everton are too small for a player like Lukaku and playing for Everton was not good enough for a decent player like Lukaku.

Difference as far as I see it is that those players had actually shown they're world class first. Rom is meh by those standards, some players deserve elevating to the next level he isn't one yet, he needs more consistency and make a difference in big games. (cough fa cup semi)

So we are telling a good to average player he is too good for Everton. I know he's saying potential to go on and be world class but likewise does that mean we don't have the potential to become a club that people sit up and take notice of in the same time?

He just couldn't be arsed qualifying his point of view in that way you suggest, because a) he's an arrogant man, and b ) he hasn't been given the impression that he should treat this club with anything like the respect it deserves.

Now part of that attitude is perhaps down to the gushing way he's been treated so far...like we're honoured beyond belief to have Koeman as manager. I said a few weeks back that it's the other way around: he has to prove himself to us. It's clear that some of our supporters (though not as many as I feared given yesterday's backlash against Koeman's words) believe he doesn't have to prove himself here. Those supporters have lost touch with exactly what this club is and what its status in the game is. They've been brow beaten into taking such comments and thinking nothing of it.

But he didn't say that.

It's not the end of the world. In the grand scheme of things, it matters little.

He didn't say Everton are too small. You're putting words into his mouth, and he didn't say Everton are not good enough.

He said that Lukaku wouldn't be making the best of his career should he play for Everton for the rest of it.

While that stings to hear, it's true.

We may as will all give up then eh?

No Shango my good man. I think the plan is to compete with the more monied clubs commercially, then we will have the resources to compete.

First you get the commerce, then you get the monies, then you get the titles. Or so I've heard.

But it's gonna take money
A whole lot of spending money
It's gonna take plenty of money
To do it right child

It's gonna take time
A whole lot of precious time
It's gonna take patience and time, um
To do it, to do it, to do it, to do it, to do it
To do it right child

Rom is far better than 'good to average'. Revisionism at its finest here.

If anything, Koeman has said that he would be wasting his talent if he doesn't make the most of it, and only making the most of it will see him leave here.

I did not think about the Stones sale in this way previously but it seems Koeman will sell any elite players to 'bigger' clubs because he wants them to fulfil their potential. He didn't exactly fight to keep Stones, Moshiri confirmed he wanted to keep Stones, Barkley and Lukaku and only sanctioned it because Koeman was happy to let him leave. I wonder what Moshiri is thinking in light of these comments. Koeman being a bit 'too' ruthless? Showing lack of respect? Not the 'family' type comments that Moshiri made about McCarthy at all!

Well they would say that as he'd just left them wouldn't they?

I think they've long moved on mate and have realised how damaging he would have been to them in the long term, they weren't exactly pulling out all the stops to keep him there were they?

Are we to disregards all Southampton fans comments as bitterness? Many of them had genuine concerns even when it looked like he would sign a new contract with them.
