Ross Barkley

Have said it before, but it's a mentality issue IMO, the lad looks like he's carrying the world on his shoulders, he thinks he needs to be our main man week in, week out, it's almost as if he's scared to try certain things that a couple of seasons ago he would just do instinctively, maybe he's aware of the groans from the crowd when something doesn't come off and that's affecting his game.

The first thing he needs to do is start enjoying his football again, he just looks like he doesn't want to be out there at times, also, he looks like one of those players who needs an arm around him now and again, under Koeman though, that seems unlikely.

We can be great at putting the ball in the box but that is pointless if there is no aggression in there trying to get your head on it. We don't look threatening when we come up for the corner, look like we are waiting for the ball to come to us instead of attacking it.

We often put balls into the area but there is no one with the aggression of getting it in the back of the net
Funes Mori is and gets goals. I don't think the delivery is the problem. Barkley's set pieces have been good this season.

Totally agree with the lack of aggression and are seeming inadequacy at actually converting corners and set pieces into scoring opportunities.

I was merely trying to make light of the fact that we're not very good at this area, yet at least they're better than they were last year!

To be fair though we don't look overly threatening at converting crosses from open play either, for most the time we're late to enter the box.

The play him deeper shouts are utterly baffling IMO, people want a player who constanly loses the ball and instead of him losing it in the final 3rd, they want to drop him deeper so he can lose the ball nearer to our goal.

Have a think lads.
Anyone who has played football at any level knows it's easier to keep the ball when everything is in front of you rather than being higher up the pitch with your back to goal.

Real issue is he hasn't had a manager including Martinez who trusts him. I'm not suggesting he deserves to be trusted however these people are paid millions per year coach the lad. Teach him to track & tackle so he can play further back it's what you get paid for.

Don't bore me saying he has had time I'm crap but I can track runners & tackle it doesn't require natural talent simple application effort & coaching.

We can't keep mollycoddling him, he's a grown man time to mature on the pitch now or it could possibly be the biggest waste of talent i've ever seen, he's that good when he's on it.

Come on Ross time to shine lad

Spot on.

I have some sympathy with this...in a roundabout way.

He WILL lose the ball a lot if he's played back in a CM two. And being stripped of the ball in that zone will prove costly (bound to happen a lot). But it IS his best position to play in...which sounds like a paradox. It's not though. Like a lot of our "family silver" players who were sold, he's at the club at the wrong time. He is a player that can play his best football deeper than he is now but only at a club bristling with talent in and around him and who can snuff out any danger that might come from shoddy defensive work to allow him the springboard to make things happen from the middle of the pitch. You basically saw that with England when he's been played (maybe not as a CM, but not as an ACM either...just allowed to loiter around the centre circle area with intent).

Sadly, this is going to be resolved with a move.

It's risk v reward for me the rewards would be greater than the risk

Me too. Defo. I've advocated biting the bullet on this move back for ages. I have a hunch that, whilst not suddenly becoming an 'enforcer' type, RB would learn to muck in with closing down the opposition a lot better than he does now.

Every good team needs blend in that CM department. If you have two predominantly holding players then you limit the way you play...especially against mediocre opponents.
