Ross Barkley

Others in the league will be putting in corners and free kicks too.
He's still at the top...
A goal is a goal, created from a corner or not. To say otherwise is pure Roberto Martinez.
Presumably an opportunity must have been created from that corner (as opposed to hitting the first defender) and the same with any free kick too. So fair do's in my opinion.

A lot of people were saying he was better deeper after he played there against QPR a couple of seasons ago with Besic. However the balance has to be right, he couldn't do Barry's job so would Gana have to do that and Ross play alongside him?

Why could he not do Barry's job because that's what he did against QPR. Barkley's range of passing is fantastic and he already often drops deeps to start attacks essentially doing Barry's job.

The question is can he defend?

Said from day one, the lad is rank average. Unfairly put under pressure by those who absurdly thought we had a world class talent. We need a new number ten tbh.
We need a new No 10 but he's not rank average. With his size, strength, athleticism and touch and passing ability he could dominate a midfield.

Unfortunately when the game quickens up his brain doesn't quite make the right choices under time pressure.

In my head I think Ross has played in a midfield 2. 5 times the game you mentioned. The derby when Baines went off at half time and Barry went to left back. Ross had s great game that day. The arsenal 3-0 at the end of that season when we won 3-0. With Naismith in a false 9 with lukaku and mirralas wide. Barkley played the left side of a 3 man midfield, he didn't do anything spectacular but had a good game. Was very disaplined.

Not sure if it was the very next game but also played in a midfield 2 v palace in the game we lost 3-2 which all but ended our champions league hopes. He also had a good game and was the one player carrying the fight to palace, especially in the last 30mins. He was unlucky not to score and set up a couple of great chances.

The only other one I can remember was v man Utd at old Trafford towards the end of last season. I think Barry was missing and Martinez played him infront of the 2 centre backs. He was poor on the day. But at that time the whole team was in meltdown.

Don't think long term it would have ever worked under Martinez, with the indiscipline and the full backs bombing on.
Like you say would need the correct balance of the team.

Personally playing gana in the holding role would be a waste for me, as he presses higher and wins the ball back further up the pitch.
If you had someone like Carvalho infront of the back 4 could probably work then.

Spurs played eriksen in midfield yesterday, but he had wanyama behind him

Barry started as a defender and has the speed of thought and footwork to get the ball out of his feet very quickly, I don't think Ross could do this type of job. His natural reaction is turn and bomb on. He could probably do a job if need be but you could someone who's more natural and do a better job.

20 chances created by Ross so far this season. Most in the club. 5th best in the league.
8 more than the next closest player. Imagine if he was actually playing well.

Lukaku has 12, Bolasie 11. Gueye 9 as is Mirallas with 9.

Why is it that Ross is getting overly criticised, yet Mirallas who is supposed to be at his very peak gets a free pass despite going utterly AWOL this season.
I ask the same question daily

No and he needs to be as far away from his own box as possible because hes a liability there imo. I'd take him out the team for a bit myself and work out a system that suits him better.

What Barkley have you been watching for the past 2 years. I can count on one hand the amount of times I have seen him try to bomb on within that time.

Barkley of Martinez first season couldn't play there but I'm not sure he exists anymore.

btw - I think Barkley started as a defender when he was a young kid too and has played pretty much everywhere.

Spurs play Erikesen there. City play Silva there. Arsenal play Carzola there. It's easier to be a play maker from deep. That's where Pirlo made his name. You want someone who's direct and drives for goal as a 10.

So if we somehow win more 100 corners and ross takes them all... and does absolutley nothing else... that's would mean he is more creative than silva, ozil?
I don't think they count every corner as a chance created. only the ones were a chance is actually created
