Like a Tadic? a playmaker along side Ross not a Cleverly who was there just to help out Oviedo who tired in the 2nd half Holgate in a back tree is the best option to add the pace with Coleman in the defence!

He's short of confidence but looked a bit better tonight, didn't hide and worked reasonably hard.
He'll never be a natural defensively and expectations are probably too high overall, for which Martinez is partly to blame, but that's not Barkley's fault.
Hopefully his form will improve. A couple of years ago Osman would probably replace him now and then and give the boo boys an easier target, but we don't really have any options now so he'll just have to continue to work harder and play himself into form

That paddy power post earlier summed things up. The lad is on a downward spiral and his confidence is shot. Rooney wasn't the brightest bulb in the box but he had ability, aggression and desire. Barkley has a ton of ability but without the rest he could easily fade into an also ran.

I am a red and think you make a great point. He is the fan out on the pitch and is trying to be all things for all men. I think his confidence is very fragile and having watched a few of your games on telly over the last few years I have noticed a few get right on his case as soon as he misplaces a pass. The fact Jagielka had to tell him at half time at Wembley that it was Martinez getting booed and not Barkley proves that. The lad has ability in spades but seems hampered in himself. As a side point, my blue mate who has been going since the 60's says " I just don't see what the hype is" he said the same of Rodwell.

He's got 22 full caps. The lad is utter class. Use him right and let him get on the ball going forward. That's what he does...that's ALL he does. It's time this was accepted. Expecting this lad to get up and down the pitch with an all round game is for the feeble minded. He's a thoroughbred with the ball at his feet and turning on the halfway line.
He needs to be sold is he's not going to be used properly. Someone like Conte will know how to get him back to the top again.
