Our play in the final third is dire.

We push up the field quickly, get into a good position and then either play it backwards or take loads of touches allowing the opponents defenders to regroup. Why are we so scared to just play it/shoot first time?

There was a positive from tonight, the defence generally dealt with crosses well and batted most things away. Coleman is an issue for me, I love him and all that and he is great going forward, defensively he worries me majorly as he simply cant defend that well.

I actually thought Oviedo played well tonight.

Again our main downfall tonight though is mentality.

Started off quite well playing some decent football. Don't know where it went wrong just descended into us looking like we didn't have a clue what we were doing. Couldn't string two passes together in the second half and awful to watch. Seemed to pick it up again in the last few minutes but too little too late.

I saw good. I saw bad. Not black and white. More good stuff in the first half, more bad in the second. Bolasie looked better on the left early on. We played a narrow, diamond formation, that had Palace on their toes. They adjusted the second half and found our weakness, defending high balls. We seemed to run out of ideas, no creativity, poor passing, lack of aggression. We need an Arteta type player with the bravado and passion of a Cahill. Gana could take on that role. I like his industry, but we need more from everyone.
There are positives, and every game we play will make it clearer as to what will need to be done in the next window to add to them - whether we do it or not is another question. In the meantime, we have to make do with what we have.

Wow....... Some massive over reactions here tonight! Yeah was a bit gash tonight 2nd half, I'll give you that, but we are 3rd at the moment... Anyone who thinks we will be changed (mentally and physically) overnight is deluded, its a work in progress (maybe perversely our good start has worked against us) Koeman himself has said it will take a few windows to get it spot on, Rome wasn't built in a day and all that!

And people worrying about the derby, city game etc... Footy doesn't work like that you know. Also Koeman's record against the 'big boys' isn't that bad as far as I recall... Keep the faith blues!

A hard working performance full of Moyesque attributes but indicative really just how little of the Palace keeper we saw in the match.

The increase in tempo can inevitably lead to rushed passes, a lack of composure, a lump it into the channels and into the box attitude. Its all about getting the balance right.

Fair result.
