Bobbys pay off

It's strange to think that if Martinez had been allowed to make another couple of first 11 signings in his first season then we would have walked into the champions league and maybe even been a dark horse for the title. However in just 2 further seasons, the same man had us real candidates for the drop. Had we suffered more injuries from January on, particularly to Lukaku, I think we were gone.

In that context, £10m isn't a bad investment to secure your overall Premier league income.

In some ways I agree with you about his first season. But going back to then we were in 4th and then we started to lose or draw games which knocked us back. We could and should have held onto that CL placing. Was that the harbinger of decliningg form for the next two seasons when it all went tits up?

I did read to be fair that he was on a performance related contract with Belgium.
That seems like a sensibly cautious move from the Belgian FA then. You do well, you get rewarded in accordance with your performance.

Basically, it sounds like he is the commission only salesman of the football manager world. Fine with me.

Shocked about this

Not at Martinez - he is merely getting what he is fully entitled to.

Actually giving him a new contract on improved wages at the point we did so was fully understandable given how we performed in his first season.

Not having any kind of performance clause in there is just typical Everton. Reminds me of giving Nyarko a 5 year contract when you could only get 4 year work permits, or not putting a contract offer to Gosling in writing.

It's just inept and has cost us over £10m. It's a decision which is as poor as the one to sign Niasse.

Tell you what though, the lesson we should all take from this is that Martinez has the best agent who ever lived. First of all manages to negotiate a contract like that and then, after abject failure, manages to get him a job at a top international side.

If any of us performed as badly as him for 66% of our time in a job, £10m is quite the opposite of what we'd recieve.

Aside from the sheer ridiculous amount of money that man got from basically putting us back years, just a quick request folks: could opening posts in future consist of more that simply posting a link please? You don't have to write an essay. Even if you simply post a portion of the text that'd be great, just give us the gist of it. @marnie this isn't directed solely at you, many do this.

But Martinez, gee whizz - I find it indecent that the majority of us will never see that amount of money in our lives, yet he gets it for doing a literally terrible job.

THIS IS PC GONE MAD or something......

People blaming him, need to look at the management who gave him a new contract after one season.

It's a spew inducing amount, brought on by panic and a club which had no real business plan.

Doubt we will see that at Everton going forward.

(I hope, well I pray)

Evertonians please seek an answer from Elstone in the next AGM. Will he answer?

May be wide of the mark, and bearing in mind it is Everton involved, but I would assume that clause(s) would be put in at the request of the manager/agent.

If I wasn't already I'd be crap at my job and get a huge pay out too;)

Absolutely agree - I don't blame him one bit. We'd all do the same.

The situation is daft though.

So, what's the prob with it? Did anyone expect any different....a man of BERTO's ability is bound to be contract savvy because the chances were that'd always happen as outcome.

Cos he's a bad tit.

It's a disgusting amount though for being incapable of doing the job you're paid to do properly though.

Hardly a shocker mind, if anything should pipe the Mosh-Distrusters down a bit.

Won't like...

The more I think about this, the worse I feel.

Most of us would pay to manage Everton and he's got £10m for cocking up. No wonder Dave 'I broke my leg at Wembley' Whelan said he was going to the very top - the very top of the rich lists aye.

If Roberto had been half as good as his negotiating team....

If I had £10m for every time I cocked up....
