Everton Transfer Thread 2016

Not quite sure how we've 'failed massively', we've had a new 'keeper who hasn't put a glove wrong in four games, a central defender who already has made the defence look so much more solid and organised, a midfielder who has been man of the match, or at the very least a contender for the award, in all four games and an exciting winger.

We've funded all four deals so far by selling one player who many claim 'can't defend' and certainly hasn't been missed on the field, regardless of how good he might go on to be.

The results to date, two wins and a draw (three points and six goals better off on last year's corresponding fixtures), leaving us fourth in the early league standings, together with a comfortable 4-0 win in the League Cup, suggest the problem areas have been addressed with around 36 hours of the transfer window to go. This without putting the club at risk with daft 'marquee' signings simply to appease the fans.

Failing massively would be spending a shed load on players that don't fit in and don't live up to the expectation. That, based on early indications, has not happened.

It's not just about spending loads of money that determines if the window has been a 'massive failure', it is more how you spend and how those players perform. So far, in that regard (in terms of results), we can have no complaints.

We still have today and tomorrow to further strengthen, let's see what happens in the coming hours before stamping our feet like spoilt children who are crying because we haven't done a Man City.

Even if our business is complete with what we have (I'd be very surprised if it is), let's see what our results are over the coming weeks before being so cocksure that everything is going to end in failure. It's moaning for moaning's sake.
Well said.

However, whilst the transfer window can't be considered a failure, as at this moment in time, I wouldn't consider it to be a good one either. Yes we have improved the starting 11, but there are still some big gaps in our squad. We desperately need cover/competition for Rom and, if we are going to overcome the hurdle of breaking down teams at home, we also need a quality playmaker/number 10. If we get those in by wednesday I'd then consider it a good window.

To consider it a great window, which still may happen but looking less likely as time is running out quickly, I would want an upgrade on McCarthy in midfield plus adding Kone to the defence. I'm happy with Coleman providing cover for Holgate at right back and hopefully Stek will keep up his excellent form in goal.

Two things concern me though. Firstly our inability to move on more of our deadwood as we really can't afford to be paying over £100k per week in wages to these guys. The other worry is what's happened to all the rumours and whispers. Nothing new at the moment which is starting to concern me. Still keeping the faith though. Just!!

Another team like us, Liverpool and Chelsea needing to keep costs under control because they are building a stadium. Frankly it's actually unrealistic we would spend on both the squad and the stadium at the same time. Building a stadium is the most important thing. Had we just bit the bullet and built one in the early 90s we wouldn't have gone through 20 years of decline and be likened to the Stokes and West Hams of the world.

Why we discussing Witsel?

I mentioned him not just because of the confirmation of our offer, but also to highlight that it is not just 'name' players for me that are important.
There appears to be a necessity to sign a player with a big reputation, but they are not always the best players to have in a 'team'.

Witsel might be talented (never seen it myself), Stones had ability (too busy crying and thinking he was better than us though for me to care), but it has been the young lad Holgate and the relatively unknown Gueye who have stood out so far this season. Stek has done great too.
The man who wants to double his salary and is unsure if Everton are on the right path for him (Lukaku), has not performed at the top level since the Chelsea cup tie last season.

I just want players who will give their all week in week out, hopefully with the talent to push us up to the top of the league (over to you Walsh and Koeman).

Me too mate. He's not 100% fit I don't think and should not have featured in the Euros, but he's a creative player who's experienced and I cannot believe he's only 24.
Always think he combines well with Barkley on the rare ocassions they've played together. Can we afford to fund his 'habits'* though?
* Allegedly
