James McCarthy

Didn't really fit into the starting system today at all, being the wing back should have been one of the two men to provide width but never went beyond the midfield, for me this was partly why the system wasn't working, no width and McCarthy didn't look comfortable or willing.

Not really sure where he fits into the team currently, not very good in the right wing back position and doesn't offer nowhere near as much as the lad Gueye and Barry in the middle.

Good to have some strength in depth though so I'd rather see this lad on the bench than Osman or Cleverley.

Feel a bit sorry for McCarthy today

He was just as bad as everyone had been last season, and this season a new manager has played him as a wing back when he's a centre mid. Imagine asking lukaku to play centre mid.

Judge him once played in the correct position under Koeman.

James confidence must be shot at the moment, and if Koeman wants to sell him like A lot on here want.. Playing him out of position and making him look even worse will only mean we will recoup less than what we paid for him!!

Sorry mate but just another RM overhyped ex Wigan player. We all bought into the myth. Think RK knows it as well

FWIW I have nothing against McCarthy - I think his energy and pace in midfield could still work under Koeman. It's his lack of positional awareness and mediocre quality on the ball that are the issues

I see him as the understudy to Gueye in the current setup - we still need a Barry replacement/understudy though

...the Barry/McCarthy axis was important in the RM team model, rarely crossing the half way line to protect the back four but RK's team has a different shape and demands more from those positions. Gueye has come in and appears first choice, McCarthy has started both games but he'll have to fight for his place going forward. It's the way it should be.

McCarthy is limited, but in a 22 man squad is not the worst player to have.
We would have a lot of work to do to have a squad full of £30m + players, we are not Man City.
Koeman has said himself that he doesn't like players who don't want competition for their place, McCarthy will probably not be a starter when others are fit but over a full season there should be opportunities for him.
He has a chance to improve under the new set-up, or go elsewhere, but I don't think he'll be off by Sept 1.
He is not a worldie we all agree but not the worst and I hope he is not the new resident scapegoat in the Osman mould. He does need to get his head down and work in certain areas of his game but Koeman can help him with that.

We need to think about cover during the African Nations Cup. We will loose Bolassie and Gueye.

I think it is sensible to have three defensive mids.

Think he might be looking elsewhere, he's been shifted out wide and second choice behind Gana and Barry.

McCarthy may not be playing in his favoured position, but RK is playing him in the team.
This must mean that he rates him to some degree at least.
Getting taken off against WBA was not a reflection of McCarthys performance but a realisation by the manager that the formation he picked was not working.
