But he generally kicked the ball upfield - towards Deulofeu.

No doubt he was under instructions to do this. But why?

I could obviously be wrong here and likely will be but, there was a few where Gerri was looking for the ball to bounce over the defenders so he could latch on. Would have been perfect with someone who can win it in the air, like

Very promising performance from El Everton today and one that, crucially, reflects the bare minimum for the home crowd to get behind them - effort.

Thought Del did a cracking job in a fairly unfamiliar role, I know Bolasie is coming in but it's clear we will still see plenty of Mirallas too. Lukaku's goals are irreplaceable but he's going to have to put the Chelsea Cup game effort nigh on every week. Needs competition though; Kone is not even bothered about defying current expectations. That gif of him kicking it off the pitch was Naisse esque.

Jagielka - Williams - Kone is going to be brutal. Brilliant fun.

Genuinely delighted with that overall.

First half was superb, but ultimately we just didn't have the quality when it counted with Del's poor finishing.

It'll come though, as will the fitness. Koeman really is starting from less than base zero and you can tell just how much Martinez's complete disregard for fitness set us back.

Well played lads.

First game of the season that's a good start.

Next few weeks are still basically about ironing out the lingering Martinez-isms, getting the match fitness fully up to scratch and hopefully a few points on the board, with some signings to boot.

But he generally kicked the ball upfield - towards Deulofeu.

No doubt he was under instructions to do this. But why?

I was thinking more of his quick distribution, finding a blue in space.

I think tea info the long ball to Deulofeu was to either see their defenders head it into our midfield of Barkley Gueye and Barry, in which case we'd invariably win it, or force a mistake in which case Deulofeu or Mirallas would be in behind with their pace.

Should work better with Rom back

For what it's worth, and for anyone who cares (doubtful), my ratings...

Stekelenburg - 8 - Was solid and commanding. Couldn't do anything for the goal. Two awesome saves.
Holgate - 6 - Overall a really good debut. Caught out slightly for the goal but not to blame - great cross and a great header.
Jagielka - 7 - Superb, looked fit despite the lack of pre-season and commanded us well.
Funes - 6 - Played some decent passes out from the back and got stuck in.
McCarthy - 7 - Thought he was excellent defensively.
Gueye - 8 - Brilliant debut. Got forward when he could and won nearly every 50/50 / second-ball. Promising.
Barry - 7 - Clever on the ball as always, played some great passes forward into space for Del/Kev as well. Was taken off at the right time as he started to tire.
Baines - 6 - Pressed really high up the pitch and put some great crosses in as well.
Barkley - 7 - Great deliveries from dead balls and showed some really neat touches.
Del - 7 - Did so well up front but just needs to learn how to finish!
Kev - 6 - Work rate was really impressive and his link up play equally so.

It was clearly the game plan. Spurs play with a high line, so Del running in behind made total sense. To exploit that though Barry had to play quick balls forward into space - and he did it excellently.

Horses for courses though. Koeman will adapt his style and system on a game by game basis. It's what makes him perfect for us. No set style like Martinez or, to an extent, Moyes.

I also think it was specific to this fixture. Can't see us playing 3 at the back when Coleman is back and we are playing a fixture we expect to have the majority of the possession

people say stekelenburg could not do anything about the goal

i disagree

and i tell you why

if you can see someone is about to cross from the right, a clever goalkeeper will know that if someone gets a head on it they are going to try and use the pace of the ball to aim it away from the keeper towards the corner, a clever goalkeeper should anticipate that and should be in a position where if his defender does not get in front of the attacker then at least he is in a position where he can dive and get a hand on the header to tip round the post or make a save.

harsh but true.

Holgate ( and I'm going against the gaffer's and your opinion ) has every right to be pissed off with Baines and Barry in particular for letting that cross in. The cross was a better still pace bit could and should have been closed down.

The 2nd save by Stekkers ( deflected shot ) was immense wasn't it. Some folk say Southall like. I say more Martyn like ( as Nev was on another planet to anyone ) but certainly bodes well

Great point wasn't it mate.

Thought the two new boys were superb. If Deulofeu had taken that chance in the first half we'd have won this.

Kone should be moved on ASAP, he's murder.

Defence looked solid for first time in ages and a couple of decent signings will do nicely.

Decent start.

pause the video at 0.08 and you will see Stekelenberg is positioned way too much on his left side of the goal

look where the ball is when the header is made, bang central in goal, it then diverts into the corner after the bounce.

if stekelenberg keeps central or central to the right hand side of the goal he at least blocks the header or gets a hand to it.

in normal play it looks fast and looks like he cannot do anything but positioning and anticipation and reaction is key attributed in a goalie

if cross comes from right you need to position yourself properly, same applies if the cross comes from the left.
