    • Farhad Moshiri wants to launch Everton’s comeback with a marquee signing this summer.

The Blues majority shareholder is determined to make the Premier League sit up and take notice with a landmark capture.

Everton are ready to smash their wage structure in order to attract top stars to Goodison and have already paid compensation to Southampton for manager Ronald Koeman, who will pocket a £6m-a-year salary.

The Blues have yet to make a senior signing this summer but are understood to be working on a couple of high profile transfers that will be seen as a statement of their intent.

Robhino was a notable signing for the then newly-rich City
Moshiri is ready to bankroll Everton’s Champions League bid and high-ranking football insiders have compared the strategy to that of Manchester City’s owner Sheikh Mansour when he took control of the club in 2008.

On the day Mansour’s takeover was confirmed, the billionaire oil tycoon sanctioned the British record £32.5m signing of Brazilian forward Robinho from Real Madrid, under the noses of Chelsea.

Manchester City fans showed their support for the club's new Arabic owners of their signing of Robinho in 2008
City had qualified for that season’s Uefa Cup but gazumped Champions League bound Chelsea by meeting Madrid’s asking price.

Mansour continued the splurge in January when he spent close to £50m on Nigel de Jong, Wayne Bridge, Shay Given and Craig Bellamy but the transfer that got people talking was the one City missed out on.

The newly-rich Eastlands outfit made an audacious bid to prise Kaka from AC Milan with a £100m offer and were ready to pay the Brazilian star £500,000-a-week in wages.

City believed they had snared Kaka but he opted to stay in Italy.

The set-back only served to stiffen the resolve of Mansour who embarked on a summer spend the likes the Premier League had not seen.

Everton lost Joleon Lescott in acrimonious circumstances but banked £22m for the defender while mega-bucks City also swooped for Carlos Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor, Gareth Barry, Roque Santa Cruz, Kolo Toure and Sylvinho, all for a combined £117m.

And so in the first 12 months of Mansour’s reign, City had spent close to £200m on players.

Everton’s new backers cannot boast the same financial muscle as City’s and the price of players has rocketed since 2008 but Ronald Koeman will still be handed a summer transfer kitty of of £100m, plus the proceeds from any player sales.

The Blues cannot offer transfer targets European football next term but believe bumper salaries can help tip the balance in their favour when they enter negotiations and help Everton land a star signing this summer.
