Went to Newport in the 80s finished 1_1 that ground of theirs ,Jesus .Cardiff fans in our end wanting to fight ,some millwal as well.
Your right about big nev used to love it when pundits said he was the best in the world shame he never got on the big stage internationally ,cos he's Welsh, sorry.
Best keeper in the world in the mid 80's,top bloke aswell,he would give lads a lift home to north wales after the match on occasions to,even if they were English,German or botswanan ;)

My all time hero. I was a keeper as a kid and in my early 20s before I concentrated on rugby and he was my inspiration. I once watched him play as Wales got thrashed 7-1 by Holland and he was MOM. My pride and joy possession is a match worth Southall black goalie shirt from the mid 90s.

A titan of a player, the goalmouth has never been the same without him. I (as other posters here) was lucky enough to see him in his prime. He was so assured and commanding, and when his services were required he was extraordinary. With a zillion Sky cameras at every match these days, the stuff he did during the 80s that was never on TV was incredible. Thankfully there is still loads of priceless footage of him online.

He works with deprived kids these days. A measure of the humanity and spirit of the man. Everything great about Everton and what we are, that. Surely a statue of him by the new stadium is in order.

Been done before but hey, it's the close season and nothing's doing and I think it'd be good to use the dead time to appreciate the good points and players of Everton, so let's look at the best goalkeeper there has ever been.

I was lucky enough to have seen him in his '80's best, yet even in his later career he was still better than a lot of goalies. In the post match interview after the '95 FA Cup final, a beaten and trophy-less Alex Ferguson spoke about Nev with a smile on his face, unable to hide the appreciation for the talent he still possessed.

Kevin Ratcliffe says that at one stage, Howard Kendall told the players in certain areas not to risk booking/red cards from rash tackles, but just to let the opposition shoot, as they were 99% sure Nev would save it.

Best player I've ever seen.

Those of us lucky enough to see the cat , were blessed. Simply , in my opinion up there with Dean , the best .

Say that to big Nev,Kev the rat,Barry hooooooooooooooorne and Gary speeds lids, you

Wouldn't have a problem doing that mate - in fact I have said that to Capt Kev in the past. He forgave me as I'd just bought him a drink in a Cardiff nightclub.

Making a good club great always start at the back. Southall playing now at his prime ..........priceless

Yeah,in your dreams

Ok sweetheart. It was after a Wales qualifying match back in the early 2000s. He was in the same club I was in. I saw him at the bar, told him I was an Evertonian, offered to buy our greatest ever captain a drink - he accepted and had a vodka and Coke. He thanked me and I said to him that it was amazing how good he was for a North Walian. He laughed and shook my hand and went off to dance.

that game probably would have been about 20-1 if it wasn't for Southall as well. Pulled off some blinding saves that game
