"Everton can't deal with crosses"

We need either:

a) new manager
b) whole new defensive block not adopted to roberto's "how we work and how we play"
c) top class goalie capable of making number of extraordinary saves per game to cancel defenders' mistakes
Defending is a team effort. We have Barkley and Lukaku who dont defend ..never. We have Stones, a showboater who thinks he is to good to do the dirty work. We have Coleman not very good ,to say the least at defending, We have Jagielka a good defender but hopeless at high balls. That leaves us with McCarthy, Lennon Barry Funes Mori a half decent Jagielka to try to defend. The last third of the game we have a stamina problem. That leaves the team stretched all over the field. Barkley Lukaku jogging around . The full backs having problems to come back fast enough. So time after time we are beaten in the last 10 min. Stoke Westham Chelsea(draw) Bournemouth (lucky draw)

This has been mentioned within threads, particularly match day threads for some time. Everton's inability to defend a cross or high ball.

I'd say we can't defend against pretty much anything, but crosses/high balls do seem to cripple us more than most.

What do you reckon? Are we vulnerable from crosses?

Been saying this for months. Coleman hasn't got a clue!

No he doesn't.
On the pitch is the least of our problems for a new owner to deal with. We have a good team with a lot of inconsistency because there's a lot of young players being relied upon. This will reduce over time regardless of manager.
I really don't want for us to go back to playing like a constipated Stoke 3 or 4 goals should win any match. We shouldn't be crippling our attack to bore our way through draws and 1-0 victories.

Yes the defence needs work, yes there are mistakes, I really don't see what a new manager is going to do about it other than change everything and set us back

Fair enough that is your opinion. I rather 1-0 win though I want Everton win everytime. The problem here is, as the results of the last and the current season indicate, we have now regressed and have become a midtable team. We just cannot perform with the good players that we have. Next season could be similar to the current campaign. A new manager with prestige and proven records should freshen things up and get the best out out the current group. Most importantly, I perfer a manager who views defending is the basis of winning a football game.

Not disputing the fact at all as I do not know the details myself, however I think most fans would find this a rather surprising piece of information.

Maybe we're simply allowing more crossing opportunities than others (hence more blocks) or we're simply too susceptible when they get put in?

Either way, all I know is that we're conceding a lot of goals from balls delivered in or around our six yard box which is awfully annoying.

Certainly surprised the heck out of me!

Am hoping Everton Musings fleshes out the details in a later post as agree they are a weakness of ours and awfully annoying.

That is a surprising bit of info, if correct. However it's not just that - collectively not defending well, poor positioning from our CB's, and no one but Funes Mori attacks the ball when its in the air - Stones gets beaten to the ball very often because of that. I know Funes Mori is guilty of not doing it well yesterday as well, but he's still the only one that does it more often. Jags is alright at it but I feel with age his jumping ability has gone down a bit.

Basically those are/were problems we didn't really have with Moyes and pretty much the same players (and some would even say one player worse in Distin).

The absolutely worrying fact is that when the crosses come in, they're not the Deulofeu type dipping crosses which ARE harder to defend - they're literally just floated crosses in the box, which nearly always connect. Surely this should ring alarm bells for the management?

And re: Bobby going nowhere. I wouldn't mind it if he was literally given an ultimatum by Mr. Moshiri - sort out the OBVIOUS defence issues or GTFO. It would keep him on his toes, and I doubt Moshiri himself would like the team he's just bought to finish 10th or worse every year...

Basically yesterday RM at half time got one substitution correct Besic for Stones - we got the 2 Nd goal and a pen- the last twelve minutes his subs w ere pathetic, and the feedom they crossed the ball in to our retreating defence were just too easy to score from - The fact also RM persisted with a keeper who was glued to his line in Timmy has not helped - - Robles came out and punched or caught what he could yesterday, also we have no muscle in the back pairing to win high balls!

Doesn't surprise me in the slightest. I think a couple of people are misunderstanding what that stat actually means.

Basically our full backs don't close down the wide players, they don't jockey and get close, they stand off and allow the cross, meaning they will often block crosses when other teams simply wouldn't have allowed the cross to come in in the first place.

They have, however, been doing much more stemming of the crosses in recent weeks and - all in all - it's told with the improved defensive stats. The odd one has still got through like.

However, yesterday I think the fatigue from going down to 10 cost us but only when he took the pace of Lennon off and replaced it with a player with no defensive discipline.

Ridiculous, though Mori had a very poor time of it as well with his heading. Him and Jags were helped massively with McCarthy dropping back to add an extra body but as soon as Lennon went off McCarthy was having to move out further to fill that void and we lost our extra body. Had Barry come on at that point we'd have been fine I reckon - in that regard.

I would like a upgrade on Coleman, might not be a popular opinion but he just not good enough when defending. I would like to see a proper defensive full back who will help with set pieces and can head a ball.

Mate he really isn't that bad. He wasn't at fault for any of the goals yesterday. Mori, if anybody is to blame individually (though it's more of a collective issue), was the defender who missed all the headers.

Nah, he doesn't offer any presence when defending set pieces, he lets Crosse in, doesn't make enough tackles but maybe I'm just fuming but his runs down blind alleys also annoy me.
