Right I'm over my disappointment that we were a bit meh. Thought we would utterly murder these.

Still, a nice 3 points and up to 10th in the table! What a time to be alive!

I hate Villa, always have and always will......but fair play to the 20 odd thousand who turned up tonight to watch that shower of no marks play for them. Make no mistake that last 15 minute spell wasn't them raising their game,that was just us being turd.

They are awful, truly no effort or pride in the shirt and will struggle in the championship. Seems the chairman left Garde in the absolute brown stuff during the transfer window so who knows how far they could drop.

Those players don't deserve another weeks wage until the end of the season and then Villa would be better off putting 11 kids in.

Performance doesn't exactly inspire confidence going into a difficult run of fixtures, but it's always nice to win.

Need to address the centre of midfield. Week after week it's non-existent.

I thought Mori was fantastic, and Oviedo defended really well too.
 
Looking through some Villa fans' forums in the last few minutes, most were of the opinion that we didn't need to get out of second gear, and it was like a training match for us. 'Didn't break sweat' was one remark.

I watched the game, and felt like others in this thread, that we could and should have played a lot better. But perhaps the Villa fan's views are a bit more pertinent, with three home games against London sides coming up. Not doing anything rash and chancing injuries in advance of those games.

But jeez, Roberto, stick to 4 at the back and a more balanced line-up...
 

Weird atmosphere tonight. Felt like an end of season game in many ways.

Well in to the Villa fans. Hopefully we'll never be in the same situation in my lifetime.

Oh, we were a bit meh, but heh, three points and all that stuff.

We never got out of second gear at all bar the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Not an excuse for sitting back too deep but it was simply a tactic to draw them out and carve them open on the break. Worked at times but did feel like the midfielder's were a bit slower on the ball than when we've done it brilliantly this season (e.g. at Stoke the passes and touches were crisp and accurate). Not to worry, we got the job done.

W.Ham is gonna be a completely different type of game, mind.

As for the sub, yeh it did feel unbalanced. Stones neither played as a right back nor centre back and him and Jags just ended up looking a bit confused - and it didn't help we were already sitting so deep.

The line up from the start was a good one though, just maybe a few of our key performers weren't quite up to their best tonight but we still won comfortably - despite Joel having to make a few good saves.

Have a point about the midfield. Think Besic coming back (while he shouldn't be rushed back in) obviously ups the anti in terms of competition and also allows us to bring on a player who adds real pace in the centre of the park.

Also worth noting that I think the fact that we hadn't played in 10 days (and a prem game in over 2 weeks) was evident. The break will do us good in the long run, but like anything when you take a break, you're always a bit leggy as you get back into the full swing of things. Don't think today was anything more than that, really.
