Roberto Martinez discussion

but one of the excuses thrown around here a lot is that young players can't be consistent but we see in Spurs that they can be.
So if as it seems you are giving credit for that to pochetino then surely the consistency problems we see are not down to the young players but roberto

its not all that black and white.

young players are generally known to be inconsistent

Spurs young players are less inconsistent at the moment

one group of young players being currently consistent does not disprove the general rule of thumb in football

its not that difficult

Young players are not robots that you can click a switch and they all perform in the same way. They have different attitude, different mindsets, different skills, differing desires and wants/needs etc.. The young players at Spurs are also inconsistent. Take Deli Alli tonight he wasn't particularly good as Mason wasn't.

Inconsistency comes with the territory for young players and they need developing. Some young players develop quicker than others but it doesn't mean they are not inconsistent.

Hi mate

to what effect did the 'best player' have on the scoreline?
would you agree that Deulofeu's delivery is better than Lennon?
At 0-1, having seen our best player beat his man over and over again and fail to provide a goal or assist, do you agree that it is a reasonable prediction that the game would have ended 0-1 had Lennon stayed on?

What Tubey said.

It's experience that gives players consistency not age. Deulofeu is probably the only player who lacks experience in our team and even he has played a lot of first team games for different sides.

And young players will get experience from differing amount of games depending on the individual.

Anyone else getting a tinsy bit worn out by this?

Watch it mate we still have to play Norwich at home yet.

I'm right bored of this. Was upset that Martinez wasn't making the obvious squad changes needed. And then he did. And we still got mugged last weekend. Because that happens sometimes.

Whatever guys, life's pointless anyway. Kiss your SO, hug your kids, call your parents, grab some cheese and toast, sit down on the couch, and laugh at the insanity of it all.
We beat Norwich at the end of the season and they both go down and we could go a decade without losing to a team beginning with N.

Is this league games?

WBA - 1
Stoke - 0
Newcastle - 0
Swansea - 2
Chelsea - 3
City - 0
Spurs - 1

Totally backs up my point about having showed the switch to be more defensively aware since that home game against Stoke...

Yes, there's examples of us throwing away a lead, and we played badly vs Swansea in the first half. But nobody can deny the improvement since the turn of the year.

Now the trick is getting the balance right consistently and the manager and players are responsible for that so fingers crossed it clicks - like it did for Spurs around November when they started to turn their draws into wins...

Also, for anybody saying Dave has chnaged stats, in this case he is being perfectly reasonable as he is using a definite point in time (new year) and then backing that up with stats for the rest of the league within the same amount of games.
Spot on mate.

Yes, those league games.

It's undeniable that the defence has improved.

In fact, if you look at the games we've played and break them down into 'quarters' for the season, you see that in the first quarter (using six games for this rather than 7 in the above example) we did ok defensively and it was the two 'middle quarters' where we became porous in defence:

First quarter = 5 goals conceded
Second quarter - 11 goals conceded
Third quarter = 12 goals conceded
Fourth quarter = 7 goals conceded

Basically, October to December we were shipping way too many goals whilst the other four months (two months either side of that October-December period) we've been pretty decent.

Coincides with Jagielka being fit and Stones being in form...

Now that isn't an excuse. The results at home haven't been good enough and we all know that, and as Rm has said in today's presser - and I quote "that's not good enough and we need to get the mentality to change that. If we do that we're going to be in a very strong position."

Today, like he promised as well, he has finally come out with a realistic aim and that is the European places.

Long way to go in this season and, as the above goal stats show, we've made defensive improvements in the league.

I happen to think that the early period of the season and the last matches we've played have been marked by a less adventurous 'flatter' back four.

Early season we had a few games with Galloway and Browning being thrown in and they are players that dont bomb on and will remain in their own half a lot more than Baines/Coleman. This later period we've seen Oviedo step in - who is much more solid than Baines defensively - and we have a less adventurous CB pairing in Jagielka/Mori.

I dont think there's any doubt that when we take a more conservative approach (especially at FB) we concede less.

I don't understand how any of these imbecile, knuckle dragging, impotent plotters can criticize someone as beautiful as Roberto when we haven't lost to a team that has a name beginning with N since Dec 2014. It's an absolute joke.

What is it with you and the letter 'N' ? Did it bring us this morning's 'Sesame Street' ?

You didn't come up with that yourself, did you? I'm picturing you cooped up at home, with days of beard growth and surrounded by mugs of stale coffee, ignoring the phone as you scan the league table alphabetically while pouring through a stack of old newspapers and calendars, brow intensely furrowed...
