Roberto Martinez discussion

Couple of gripes i have mate - aside from the substitutions etc which are frankly done to death already the past day on here, is WHY we have gotten to mid February and still have absolutely no one we can play up front either with or instead of Lukaku, all talk about the greatest squad since the 80's, but Christ the 80's squad had more than 1 striker, the guy currently looks at best 75% fit and is having to play through anyway because we have absolutely nothing as an option, bad management that in a big way

Also Baines has been sidelined and frankly it's baffling, he wasn't playing badly by any stretch - he's pretty fresh having missed a large part of the season already, and against a team like West Brom why go with Oviedo when anyone with eyes can see that it's going to eb a game the fullbacks are camped in their half, go with the player who is far better as an attacking threat
The first point is worrying but I wouldn't be too harsh on Martinez there. Finding a guarantee of goals in the market is obviously difficult. Hence the prices.

Second point is more annoying for me. I'm in the 'Martinez in' camp but I won't defend him like a devout catholic with the pope.
He insists on 2 defensive midfielders. Supposedly to provide cover for our attacking fullbacks. As you say no need to hold back yesterday.

Good post mate.

You know, I have been thinking about it as to why I am still in the "keep Roberto camp" and I have a confession to make.

I honestly believe that the only reason right now is that I am scared if we sack him tomorrow, Lukaku, Deulofeu and Barkley will leave too. Stones I think is gone in the Summer anyways.

I really have come to this conclusion and I hate to feel this way. Torn.

Constructive opinions please?

To be fair no matter who we would (realistically) get - two out of Rom,Stones, Barkley trio will be gone come August.
So we are firmly in the 'suck it and see with Bobby' situation - praying for an unlikely F.A cup win or an even more unlikely top 6 finish

AVB has failed twice in this league already.

Mate he didn't fail at Spurs - first season he achieved their record ever points total in the premier league (sound familiar) and was one Newcastle goal away from pipping Arsenal into 4th place - closer than Martinez managed.

Second season was sacked for being in 7th place in December. Having been forced into selling Bale in the summer - which meant he had to change completely the way the team played. Also left Spurs as the highest win percentage manager they've ever had.

Chelsea he had one season with and basically ran afoul of the senior players and Abramovich not liking the fact he dropped some of his favoured/influential players, when he was sacked in march they were 3 points off 4th place were in the last 16 of the CL and still in the FA Cup - Di Matteo went on to win both as it happens with that team after replacing him

In Russia he has been a revelation for Zenith

Good factual post

Nah.

He deserves to remain until May and then his performance should be assessed. A mid table finish and no pot, would be tough to accept given the quality of the squad.

However, there's a danger of throwing the baby out with the bath water, by canning Martinez
If we go out of the cup I would sack him, its to long a run of poor results for him to change it , we really can't do any worse.
Worst home defensive record out of Europe's top five leagues with a back line that has three current England players , and a Argentine international in it tells you all you need to know.
I have waited for a turn around to happen its not going to come, last night I went through a calander year of results ,posted it on here. Somewhere its shocking reading , have a look if you think its just a kneejerk decision that I now want him gone..
Another thing that worries me is I don't think the crowd really buy into his football brand at all, it just doesn't get the crowd going.
He is a decent fella as far as I can tell , but well out of his depth in this job, he would be OK as a general manager for the club away from the first team, but that's not what we employ him for, so for me barring a miraculous turn around I want him gone.

I disagree. If two leave then for me he is of no use keeping. Only Stones will leave I believe.

From what I remember of AVB, he was alright until the going got tough, then showed that he was completely unable to deal with criticism and pressure.

I was glad he kept the same team and we started quite brightly - looked good for the first quarter of an hour.

But then when you looked at the bench, the average was about 32!

If Martniez is the great progressor of young talent, why is that? Where's the next exciting prospect coming through, being given a chance to get first team action?
And again No plan B.

Just imagine the pre-match tactics,

"But what happens if they score first Roberto? And park the bus?"

Don't worry, we are in such a phenomenal moment of form it won't happen"
But if it does, we will get the ball to the 18 yard box and then pass it out wide. We will cross into a box with the tallest average height defence in the league and hope we will score."
If not we will bring on Kone who will do something so unpredictable that even our team will be confused."

Ok boss.
