Roberto Martinez discussion

I am the only person who doesn't think that Stones and Howard are anymore injured than I am?! Roberto doesn't want to be seen making a very public decision in dropping them because it reflects on his judgement in the first place, so instead he invents a convenient little rouse that the pair of them got minor injuries in training and that way he saves face as he isn't dropping them as such? In the meantime Robles and Jags/Mori play well and then RM has to say when they 'become fit again' in a week or two, it would be unfair to drop the players doing well, Howard and Stones will have to make do with the subs bench for a while.

The thing is we'll never know mate. Over the years there's been countless stories of players injured, normally to cover up misdemeanours off field or a fall out with the manger. He can " spin " the injured line out for as long as he wants and it can't really be questioned other than for the press to ask for a likely recovery time. If he declared Stones had been dropped the press would be all over it - " Stones unhappy at being dropped, wants a move in the Summer etc ".

The injury line is easier to manage and also means the press don't start seeing things that aren't there.

Either way it would appear that it's been the best for thing for the team at the mo, which is to his credit.

Credit where credit is due.Stoke is a tough place to visit but we won 3-0 and it should have been more and we have Man United in 5th right in our sights. Not taking Bournemouth for granted in the FA cup but that's a winnable game so it look's like the Swansea match was our bottoming out moment. The team and manager seem to have learned the lessons from their mistakes but we'll back to square one again if Tim Howard is back in the team when he's fit!

The problem we have right now is 5th is obviously the highest we can go and you just have to look at united and think they aren't going to drop that place. As poor as van gaal is, he still has quality players to drag them through the rest of the season. I want us to aim to overtake them but i won't be crushed if they keep themselves at arms reach.

Ironically for all the ifs and buts of our season, take 3 games, chelsea (LAST MIN GOAL), Bournemouth (LAST MINUTE GOAL) and stoke (3-1 UP WITH 15 MINS TO PLAY) we would already be there, asking the If only questions of why we aren't closer to the top.

9 wins minimum inlcuding 6 vs united and perhaps Martinez can establish himself, and us as being as good as we actually are.

Robles should have been dropped last year IMO when Howard came back - the litmus test is when Martinez says he's fit. If he goes back in the team, then Martinez is proper mental.

Totally agree on this, was the first thing i thought. If so i don't think it is fair on Joel, Martinez was quick enough to say Howard was number one when he shoehorned him right back into the side a while back after Howard had to go off in a game. Joel stepped in and had two good games and was dropped again soon as Howard was fit with Martinez saying his number one comes right back in, hardly fair on Joel, so if the role is reversed now he should say so and not worry about hurting anyone's feelings.
You can say the same with Mori, has been the better player, should start every game no matter who is fit. Obviously we don't know either way who is fit and who isn't but its a bit of a coincidence two players who have been costing us are suddenly injured.

Has lucked out having three injuries that have forced his hand into changing the side

The up turn in fortunes are sheer luck

So the return of Jagielka and McCarthy from injury and thus returning to the team is luck?

The norm would have been for them to die from their respected injuries?

Mate?

17 wins for the season would be 45% wins, pretty high to be fair

While i do agree, and we have been royally dry bummed by refs and officials this season. We should have had the knowledge and gamesmanship to close them games out and defended with our lives to get the three points.

I think thats the difference in making a top 5 side, we have all the flair and know how going forward - look at the goals we scored this season - we need to know that when we go 3-2 up with late goals we have to close the game out.

But don't think am preaching anything there people don't know. fine margins and all that - but i think we look at ourselves before the officials, in all them games mentioned am sure we could find reasons the ball should never have been near our box!
