Roberto Martinez discussion

This is so ridiculous that i can see Spurs as the champions, Leicester runners up, West Ham in the Champions League and Martinez praising his team after finishing 15th that they can "compete with top top teams and are building something special"

I no its pathetic and no excuse for it, where watching out for the result of sides like West Brom and Palace hoping to not drop any further behind, while a championship side are top of the league thanks to professional management.
Even Liverpool are still in the hunt for a European place, have the worse squad they have had for a long time, and where stuck behind them.

Humour me and forget the averages. We have Barry, Howard and Jagielka, all over 33 which distorts the averages.

Funes Mori
Besic
McCarthy
Galloway
Barkley
Lukaku
Stones
Deulofeu

Not just impact players...all the above start and have more or less started the same games together.

Now let's compare that to any other team in the league. Pick one which is so reliant on young/inexperienced players in key positions

Any of them.

Pick any.

mate?

You can expand on that:

DEFENCE - Stones / Mori / Galloway
MIDFIELD - Besic / McCarthy / Barkley
ATTACK - Lukaku / Deulofeu

So its not just one area of inexperience, its throughout the whole team.

Add in a couple of seasons experience across these players and playing time as a unit and the inconsistencies will disappear...

i'm not sure why people cant see this or think Howard /Jags / Barry dont distort the average age + that somehow we shouldnt sign potential superstars but should be bringing in experience.

All a bit Moyes.

3 points away from being 16th in the league, 6 away from 17th.

10 points away from 6th place.

That should speak volumes in itself. Make or break few weeks coming up, if we don't start picking up points we're going to be right in a relegation scrap. Clearly RM is going to be in the job till at least the end of the season (unless he royally messes up) and if i was on that board these next few weeks would massively effect the planning for next season. (Its not far off the Smith/Moyes era)

But this is Everton so i have no faith in the board to do anything even if we lose the next 3/4 games in a row and end up either bordering or in the bottom 3.

What your suggesting is proper Wenger, remind me, how did Wengers policy of buying young lads from Europe work out for him?

Thankfully Martinez doesnt think like you, he realises you need a mixture of youth and experience, the cornerstone of EVERY single successful team in history. Alan Hansen is laughed at for his "You dont win nothing with kids" statement, considering United then went on to become the most successful team in the English game, but that united team didnt just have kids, it had a solid backbone of experienced players.

As for your "All a bit Moyes" comment, Moyes tried MANY, MANY times over the years to find a gem, he picked a few up in his time, Dier, Mustafi, Coleman, John F Stones to name but a few, but hey, its not about Moyes is it.

That's not how athletes' minds work. They have less patience than fans. Athletes like Lukaku, Stones, Barkley and Deulofeu aren't going to wait around to win with a struggling club when they are convinced that they as individuals are good enough to contribute to a winning side today.

If they're worth their salt, they'll demand the same from everyone at the club, be it fellow players or kit men.

Seems as tho you got me started, Martinez is hailed as some kind of Youth Demi-God, if we ignore Tarahasji for now, cos, well, hes not here and we have no idea what hes like, Martinez has in his time only brought in Galloway, lets just ignore the fact that whoever scouted Galloway seemed to somehow miss Dele Alli, so Galloway and Geri.

Good spot on Galloway, big hopes for the lad me, gonna be a cracking player, but a player, that IMO, was rightly dropped for Baines as soon as he was fit, who lets be honest, was starting to look a bit ropey at LB anyway, considering hes a 19 year old CB, I forgive him.

Then theres Geri, a Barca prodigy, hardly unearthing a gem there like.

Im sure people would love to give him credit for John Stones, Ross Barkely and the 28m gem we unearthed in Lukaku, but no, you cant have them, Stones and Barkley belong to Moyes and Lukaku belongs to Sky.

Then theres the other players he has brought in, Kone(LOL), Escape from(LOL), Eto'o, Barry, he also gave a 20 year contract to Tim Howard at the age of 45.

Thats it really, just wanted to have a little rant.

Thanks for reading, COYFB.

Barry has been quite good for a free. Just played too many last season. Been great in seasons 1 and 3. Not talking about youth but for Martinez transfers in gerenal he seems to do well when spending decent cash (rom, mccarthy, mori, del, lennon, galloway, besic). Kone is really the only poor one. McGeady and alcatraz were dirt cheap/frees. People seem to want robles so he cant be too bad for a few mil. So overall he's made some good signings, one crap one, and two low cost punts didn't work out. Martinez' squad building hasn't been a problem, just getting the consistency out of it is the problem for him

I wasnt really having a pop at his overall transfer record, I was focusing on his young/old players really.

Barry was an amazing signing, he wasnt free tho :D

Anyway, ive stated many, many times, BIG, BIG fan of Martinezs work in almost every single transfer window, hes built a superb squad, hes had a few donkeys over his time, but they are more than eclipsed by the great signings hes made, I mentioned Geri above, 4.2m is just :D:D:D and of course he gets massive bonus points for Besic.

But hes ruining it all by sticking with a dead weight in goal, at some point, even the most rational of men would say to himself "Hey, we are leaking goals, we have different players, hell we have even tried different things in training, but for some reason, we are still leaking goals, MAYBE I should try a different GK", but no, not El Coco, he talks utter pony about being part of the badge.

Mind blowing.

What im saying is not about NEW signings....

Its simply that we have had 8 players who are very young all playing in the team this season which can mean inconsistency...

If they played together for a couple more seasons then these inconsistencies would disappear....

For NEW signings...

A-- We need a Goalkeeper. You can look for an experienced keeper or a young keeper however as long as they are top class. Theres a few good ones out there who are going to be attainable.

1-- Experienced keeper + One youngster to loan out like Stoke did with Butland....

2-- One proven keeper like a Butland to last a decade

3-- One young keeper

They are the options i think....

B -- Barry will be 35 by next season, we also have Besic and McCarthy who are both very good players. Where do they slot in though, i mean if Barry does a "distin" then does McCarthy go to DM "pivot" as his passing range isnt the best or does Besic -- leaving a space for a box to box player to be signed....or do we go for a deep lying playmaker to replace Barry?

C -- Tarashaj i hope can cover for Barkley....Lennon for Deulofeu and Mirallas for Niasse leaving Kone as cover for Lukaku. Its clear we need someone here.

D -- Jags is 34 in August, again we dont know if he will do a "Distin". How long will it be or is it viable to expect Galloway or Holgate or anyone to come through over the next 2 seasons to become at least 3rd and 4th choice?

Basically the spine needs a GK / DM / CF and perhaps a CB.

In 2 seasons if we keep the same players as we have now then the "youth" who are 21 will be 23 and used to playing with each other....do we add more players under 21 with amazing potential to the squad OR do we add experienced players on big money who may not be happy sitting on the bench?

Alot depends on the centre mid area i think and who Martinez sees playing where once Barry is on his last legs...a proper playmaker sitting deep for example changes the whole dynamic.

Fact is though he played Stones and Barkley through thick and thin and kept praising them even when playing poorly.....its worked so far.

Lukaku last season was getting the ball back to goal and now with that short term disaster over he now has improved massively.

Deulofeu is improving and Galloway gt 3 games ahead of Garbutt end of last seson so hes shown faith there also.

Howard now rubbish but Jags, Barry and Kone could all do "distin" levels next season based on their ages....hes got to balance these oldies whilst using cash to bring in top players.

if not he would have just signed mid level players to fill the squad...when he has spent money hes not failed yet. Small money or frees not done so well but they were on stopgaps.

All this 'we have a young team be patient' argument is illogical. Stones, Lukaku and perhaps more may not even be here next season let alone in 2 seasons time or whenever this magical 'click' moment supposedly happens. It's a great investment strategy that's for sure, no one is money balling better than Martinez. Is it bringing him consistent league performances? After almost 3 seasons he's nowhere near that. If you're happy with Everton being a finishing school for the top clubs whilst deluding yourself that we're going to end up with the finished product that's fine, continue on your ideological trip Bobby. If you want to see us improve through consistently high league positions and cracking the top 4 (that impossible task that both Spurs and Leicester will do this season) then it's adios Roberto.

Next 2 games could see us get to the dizzy heights of 9th or even 8th depending on how Southampton do on Saturday.

No point in hiding anything with stats or excuses any more, we need to start winning premier league football matches. We are 10 points off 6th going into tonight's game. If we harbour any chance of European football next season we need to start now.

He's no going to be sacked for failure under the current board and he has a chance or redeem himself with a large section of the fan base that have lost faith in him.

If we don't win tonight though and he comes out with any more BS then I hope our potential new owners are taking note.

Hes not asking for patience, hes telling us everything is ok, hes telling us that howard is vital to the club, hes blaming refs, the home fans and everybody else that isnt him.

If he wants patience he can stop chatting utter pony, hold his hands up and admit hes made mistakes.

I take your point generally, especially the point about Howard, but he is equally vocal about wanting patience...

Roberto Martinez has refuted suggestions Everton are underachieving, insisting he is building a squad that will be competitive for years to come.

Everton - knocked out by Manchester City in the semi-finals of the Capital One Cup on Wednesday night - are 12th in the Premier League having won just six matches all season, with only one victory in their last 10.

Martinez has led his side to just 30 wins in 81 matches since the start of the 2014-15 season, with Everton keeping only 21 clean sheets in that time. The FA Cup now represents their only realistic chance of success this season and Sunday sees Everton face a tricky tie at League Two Carlisle.

You cannot be underachieving when this team is new," Martinez said.

"This team has been formed over the last two-and-a-half years and we are developing something that is going to be very powerful for the future

Romelu Lukaku (left) and Ross Barkley have been two of Everton's top performers
"That process is not going to be overnight or straightforward. You need to go through painful experiences to develop the know-how of a winning team.

"In my eyes we have one of the most competitive squads in the league with four or five players with the best potential in Europe and that has been down to a clear strategy.

"We have achieved this squad not having the blank cheque of £500m, which other clubs have had to become a competitive team overnight.

We have an overall approach of wanting to get into the top four and we are showing signs we are starting to do that.
Roberto Martinez

"It would be very easy for us to say we can't really compete against the top four and accept where we are and fight every short-term target but we have an overall approach of wanting to get into the top four and we are showing signs we are starting to do that.

"Are we going to do that overnight? One hundred percent no. You have to learn as a team how you can compete in those matches and we are right in the middle of that process.

"I understand expectations and the history and heritage at Everton and I think we are getting very close to getting back to the glory years that we had but it is not going to be easy or pain-free."

Much is expected from Everton defender John Stones
Martinez admits he understands the criticism but has called for patience to allow him to get things right.

"As a manager you need to accept that we need to get wins," he said. "I will never come out with excuses and try to justify lack of wins.

"I am extremely aware of the potential we have in the club and we should be working under the expectation of winning games and titles.

Paul Merson previews Carlisle v Everton and Chelsea v MK Dons
"I feel we are close to getting what the fans deserved but I'll accept any criticism and I'll be the one fronting that because I share their frustrations at a lack of wins.

"But I am the first one who has a strong belief we will be successful at the end of it."
