It was a daft call, he's been sulking since last summer and playing like a drain. They've been offered over £21m for him this window and he's knocked it back, and now he'll be into the last months of his contract come the summer.

His stock is unlikely to have risen by then either. Probably cost his club about £10m that 'principled stand'.
It was just quoted that as he was a home player so there's compensation what ever happens with the contact, also it think he had a year left in the summer, they will still get 20 million when he goes, chairman aren't stupid they are business men. Also if he gets fit and gets 5/10 goals which he capable off, they may keep them up and that's worth absolutely millions, good call by the chairman I say.
