Gareth Barry

I thought he was one of the few who struggled tonight. I don't think he was terrible as much as he didn't have the influence he normally does.

It would be naive to think that he can maintain that type of schedule with the same level of performance. Not just because of his age, I would have similar concerns for Lukaku. I would love to see either of them get a proper rest at some point.

I wouldn't! We'd be dreadful!

Barry is playing brilliantly and at the moment the only reason he shouldn't be in the team is for an injury (or in the FA Cup next round). Lukaku, similarly, needs to be starting every league game if fit. We don't have the back up to risk it - and we won't get it.

People often go on about having depth up top, but if you look at the Prem hardly any teams have a back-up forward that is anything more than decent.

City - they have Bony. At times looks class and at times looks terrible. Think he needs to be the main man in a team but he is a quality player.
Chelsea - Remy, meh, he's good but tbh don't see him ever pulling up any trees at the top level (i.e. CL). They also have Falcao, who just isn't cut out for the English game and has gone proper Torres.
Liverpool - They have tons of strikers but their best one is never fit and their £32m man is lucky to get 10 mins in a game despite being their top-score, so Kloppity plays a midfielder there because he's a hipster. Ings looked their best player in that position before his injury...
United - Rooney looks to be hitting form again and Martial is a good back up with tons of potential - though he keeps getting pushed out wide.
Arsenal - Giroud has been quality this season, and they have Walcott and who can also play there - but again no out-and-out back up striker.
Spurs - Nothing after Kane, may go for Berahino.
West Ham - Carroll is always injured, Valencia is often played out wide, but they do have a few good options.
Sotton - Long is a good back up for them.
Leicester - Ulloa and Okaaki are both good options.
Stoke - Bojan has become their starting striker in a lot of games - but goals mainly come from Arnautovic and him.

That's just naming the sides that, on paper at least, i'd say are around teh same quality as we are - granted we aren't right up there.

My point being is that it is very hard to get a back up striker that can come in and perform to a guaranteed high level unless you're in Europe. You either have to gamble with youth, or you have to go for an experienced player. Both of those options bring potential issues.

It is a real struggle for a club like us in our current position to be able to go out and get a forward in their prime (24-29) who is going to fit straight into the Prem and our style. The best we can hope for is probably a decent loan option.

As I am sure some pointed out I thought Barry looked a little off pace and not at his best. This should not come as a surprise as we are back to a similar schedule as last year, where we are playing 3 matches in 10 days. The short weeks really put a lot of pressure on him more than anyone else in the squad. With the emergence of Besic, people are wondering if this will limit McCarthy's role in the future but I think we could really use more of a rotation of our CMs to keep everyone fresh.

all this 'loads of experiance' talk is utter crap.
my granddad has loads of experience, doesn't mean ill put the 80 year old on the wing and say 'we need his experiance'.
hes to to slow, ive said this so many times now, when we get caught on the counter he is the holding midfielder, hes to slow to get back behind the ball. which is when he starts commiting fouls in stupid ereas. he will have the odd good game, done very well agsint city, I put that down to Mo for doing all the running, he was outstanding. mo and macca are the middle 2 for me. barry is too slow, causes to many problems and costs us more than he actually benafits us.
loads of experience? keep him in the dressing room then.

Did Spurs not sign a striker during the summer for big money ?

Yet you used the experience excuse for why Howard should be in goal.

Barrys been one of our best players this year

that's different, goalkeepers tend to get better with age and experience, its very rare to see young goalkeeprs in the top 2 tiers of English football.
not when your in the middle of the park, where you have to be working hard non stop for 90 minutes.

No mate. They have Kane and that's it - he's the only striker in their senior squad.

They brought in Son, but he's more of a player who plays as a support striker or out wide. No where near as effective when he's tasked with leading the line.

The majority of good keepers in the prem are under 30.

Barrys in the top 5 for distance covered this season

you could put a turtle on the pitch and he could cover more james McCarthy, does that mean the turtle isn't slow?
the point is barry is too slow to cover and get behind the ball, specifily on counter attackes, so when hes the holding midfuelder, it causes problems. have you seen how long it takes him to get off the floor after a tackle? hes too old and too slow. when he has the ball at his feet, great, especially in a game where we are in control but if we are on the back foot, its out of postion and sloppy tackles, why els would his yellow card record be so great?
agasinst city he was brilliant, but that's because we had hold of the game.
