Bryan Oviedo

Hugely impressed with Oviedo today. I knew he was two footed, but had concerns about him playing right back. Concerns which were totally groundless.

If he wants to leave to get regular first team football, then I couldn't blame him, but I still hope he stays. He's a cracking footballer with a great attitude and is a great fit for our club.

He wasn't MOTM though. Besic pipped him for that.

Showed again just how versatile he is

He's a fullback and looked more comfortable, and effective at right back today, admittedly against poor opposition, then he'll ever look on the wing. He's great with the ball in front of him, but looks very ordinary with his back to the oppositions goal.

If Roberto was trying this out today to see how it worked, he'll be very pleased with what he saw. Early days yet though, and I'm assuming if Funes Mori is OK, that we'll see Stones at right back at Eastlands on Wednesday.

RM has said this isn't happening, said something like moving him wide would be like losing two players due to how good he is in the middle.

I thought he would too but these were Martinez prematch comments for the FA cup game -

“If you move him you lose two players,” he said. “We won’t do that. John can play as a right back and he will always give you that option but I think at the moment we need to be strong and balanced in the squad. “John Stones as a right back would be losing one of the best centre-halfs in world football"

Sounds more likely to be either Pennington or Oviedo at RB

Ta folks, hopefully playing two games back to back isn't asking too much of Oviedo then. I'd hate for him to have another setback, though he did look sharp today and never seemed to be blowing so hopefully he'll be fine.

I can't see Pennington getting the nod unless Oviedo has a reaction to playing 90 minutes today.

This is key. Twice he played 2 games back to back earlier this season and he picked up an injury in the second game both times (Aug 26 & Aug 29, Oct 27 & Nov 1). These were the only 4 games he started this season. Going from this history I don't think it'd be right to risk him on Wednesday, giving that you risk losing him for another couple of months. Ease him in gently.

Both times he'd played 120 minutes in the first game then playing 90 minutes only a few days later, was daft to do it once let alone twice.

That is a good point, I didn't spot that. I'm really not sure who will get the nod at RB against City. Oviedo seems the best option at the moment but since we might need him later this season I'm not sure I'd want to push him too hard, too soon.
