Agree with this, if people think just replacing Howard is going to solve our issues they will be in for a rude awakening. A lot of people last season pointed the finger at Distin, it's how we defend as a unit is the issue.

But, heyho let's stick with a good old fashioned scapegoat.
He's not a scapegoat just a over the hill crap keeper in which its RMs fault for picking him extending his contract till the age of 39 YEARS OLD FGS!

Rubbish a keeper is thje main last line of your defence if he does not breed confidence then your defence will be uneasy , and thats whats happening!
Judging by our home/away splits, I'd say it's more likely that our "supporters" are making the defence uneasy.

You just do not get its its a band of three you defending him on this thread - doug and an alos runner who only defend an over the hill keeper, Look he has been a good servant , but why o why do we hang on to senior players too long - it may cost RM his job!
Tims finished end of!

Poor defending may cost RM his job. Anyone who thinks Howard is anything more than one aspect of that is deluding themselves. We can't defend when we're playing at home. Full stop. Every single player on the pitch and coach at the club bear some responsibility for that, and I have to think the so-called supporters who boo our keeper and start whistling any time we hold onto the ball for more than a few seconds without making a forward pass also bear some responsibility. No one is blameless, and the idea that if we just swap out Howard for any other keeper we'll all of a sudden start keeping clean sheet after clean sheet is pure insanity. Being a popular opinion doesn't make it any less wrong.

O come on mate that's daft, we could have Southall in goal at his peak right now, if we just allow chance after chance after chance it isn't going to work, there is no such thing as last line of defence in football, a team has to defend as a full unit, right from the front throughout the starting 11, it's not a one man job.
As Timak said, replacing Howard wont solve the problem, yes it might help, and it has to be done tomorrow really, yes it might get us a few more points a season, but it wont see us make any significant strides up the table.

There'd still be issues but just getting rid of Howard would make a world of difference

when will you not see it TH ruins our defence he is like bostick on his line and comes for balls when he has no chance of getting them big nev now would do a better job!

And only if it's with a genuinely top level keeper. Not someone like Begovic or Marshall or whoever this kid from Ligue 2 is that people have been talking about in the transfer thread.

A better goalkeeper would certainly improve us, just like an upgrade at any position would. We can't just settle for whoever's cheap and available, though, because it just won't help.
