Kompany and us

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy he is missing, he is a good solid defender. I just personally think he is massively overrated and I mean massively. When I think of some of the best central defenders I have seen, He's not even on the periphery of my thoughts.

Good player, not great.

Totally agree.

My abiding memory of him is setting the ball up for Coutinho to score at The Pit to ensure the RS became Easter Champions in 2014 :pint2:

Going to be out for 3-4 weeks, according to BBC, so he's definitely out of the first leg of the semi, and probably the second leg, too.

City have had 7 clean sheets in the 8 PL games Kompany's played this season and only 1 in 11 that he hasn't. Speaks volumes.

Got a feeling we're in for a couple of high scoring games!

From what I watched last night Silva and Aguero looked well off the pace and were subbed in the second half. As it's only a week to go before the first leg and they have, like us a game this weekend, they will not get match sharpness in time for next week. They will probably play a part and as much as I think Silva is an exceptional player I can see us snubbing him out.

Aguero is holding himself back as he seems worried that he will get injured. Kompany's miss will be huge for them as they have only kept 4 clean sheets in all competitions, home and away, since the end of August - United, Villa, Crystal Palace and last night against Leicester. There are goals to be had against this City team. As our current defensive frailties are all to evident I'm predicting we will get to Wembley with 2 nil nil stalemates and win the penalty shoot out at the Etihad.

Anyway the month of January is a big month, as it was 31 years ago.

Oxford United v Everton, Milk Cup 1983-84 Part 4/4 - Duration: 7:24. by DeddingtonSteve 9,406 views

1983-84 — League Cup Round 5; Wednesday, 18 January 1984
Oxford United @ Manor Ground, Score: 1-1 (Heath), Attendance: 14,333
Everton: Southall, Stevens, Ratcliffe, Mountfield, Harper, Reid, Irvine, Heath, Sharp, Johnson (Richardson), Sheedy

In the programme for the retun game at Goodison Park, I discovered two things: Which Everton player in the 1983-84 campaign had the middle name McGregor? Which former Everton player had the Christian name Seamus? But due to an error in his original registration forms was known by another Christian name until he corrected the mistake in the summer of 1983, apparently the players called him Seamus around the training ground but the public knew him by his registered name.

After all the nervousness that had been on show at the Manor Ground, Everton had progressed to the Semi-Final stage with a thumping win at Goodison Park, over the underdogs of Oxford United... although, to be fair to them, they never at any time gave up the ghost and they continued to perform to a level that belied their league status. Kevin Richardson (7’) struck early and Kevin Sheedy (34’) got another goal in the first half. An early goal in the second-half from Adrian Heath (52’) and another from Graeme Sharp (90’) following a consolation for Oxford United scored by Paul Hinshelwood (89’) meant that a two-legged tie with Aston Villa and a reunion with former Everton player Steve McMahon awaited the Blues and a place at Wembley was tantalisingly close".

Any excuse to delve into a bit of nostalgia.

I'd feel sorry for him, but then I remember he's probably on £100k+ a week, and then I realise that, I wish I could become a millionaire by being on the sick for 2 and a half months

I remember vividly my reaction to hearing David Johnson was in the team because imo he had been offering nothing in this return spell to the club. But Howard was stubborn (!!!! Any modern parallels??? I hope so!) and stuck by him although I think when he was brought off he never played for us again. We were terrible in that game and could have been well beaten.
I listened to the replay because lived in Bucks at the time. Belief was beginning to run through that team at that point, we had had the Stoke away cup game which was mega, I think in the middle of three games versus Gillingham in FA cup 4th round and this progress was beginning to tell in the League cup. Slowly but surely a young team that could play well in patches but made errors and was inconsistent and even booed badly just a few weeks before at a rubbish home game versus Coventry at end of December was beginning to find its feet and learn how to win!!!!!
Just checked, we played the Gillingham 4th round the Saturday after the league cup QF replay. 31k at the Oxford game, 22k versus Gillingham. Battered them but took three games to see them off eventually!

Oxford should have battered us at their place. We couldn't keep the ball and if it wasn't for Southall and the defence we would have. What stuck with me from the Oxford game was that I think it was the making of the Mountfield/Radcliffe partnership. They were so determined that night that we will concede. Even though we did they continued to roll up their sleeves and fight for every ball. Southall was immense as well.

The attendances in the cups at home wee never matched in the league. We had 22 000 against Gillingham and the next league game had 13 000 against Notts County. 40 000 turned up against Villa in the home leg of the semi final. We were turning out for the cup games but not the league. Many thought we had a chance in the cups for silverware and to hell with the league. Maybe a similar pattern now!!!!! Let's get silverware in the cabinet and take it from there.

I went the Villa away game and there were an awful lot of Evertonians who got into the ground that night. Amazing scenes afterwards. Which made the journey back to London that bit sweeter, knowing that we had a Wembley appearance to look forward to and a chance of our first trophy since 1970.

True mate, although the economic crisis ate into attendances too. The Villa away game was one of my top ten Everton moments. Bitter sweet seeing Andy King make a mistake that let them pull one back after we had hit the woodwork 2/3 times in the first hour. He looked like he wanted the ground to open up and swallow him. (Iirc it was Paul Rideout scored for them!!!). It was one of his last 3 or 4 games for us. Phenomenal away support acting like the 12th man and like you I got a train back to London. Kept schtum for a while until the Villa fans got off then celebrated like mad!!! Then 4-4 at Watford on the following Saturday. Very happy days. Fine margins though. We did not really deserve the draw at Oxford but we certainly grabbed our opportunity with both hands.
