Roberto Martinez discussion

I do quite like you, cheese, but do you honestly think Everton are trying to win the league?

Like do you think kenwright is demanding that as a goal?

It just isn't on our radar as our aim.

Lol...20 pages in 2 1/2 hours since I left to get work done/drive home.

I do think the Manager is trying to make good on him CL promise. We have potentially some of the best players in the league. I also think the model he is using is a sound one for those aims. Sure, we may end up selling Stones for £40 mil and Lukaku for £60 mil. That's 5 or 6 top players we could buy. Rinse, recycle, repeat...sustainability. Under our current financial limitations, this is the only way Everton could ever dream of winning the league. Is it on the radar today? No. Absolutely not. But these things take time...especially if you are trying to build through young players who have the potential to become world class.

I certainly don't think Bill is demanding anything bar don't get relegated.

If people are using the attacking side of a team saying Martinez deserves the plaudits then they have to accept he deserves the criticism for the defensive shortcomings.

It's pretty straightforward. Can't have it both ways.

I think everyone on both sides agrees with that.

We are currently a team who can attack but can't defend. If we could do both, we'd be superb.

The question is whether the best way to make that happen is to change manager or not.

I'm on the side that sticking with our manager is the best chance of that happening, others disagree.

But that the way we can attack but can't defend is down to martinez everyone agrees on/

We would virtually be a shoe in for top 4 if not for some calamitous defending. We have a world class centre forward for the first time in my lifetime and it's getting us nowhere. The number of games threw away already is just staggering. Certainly the most frustrating season I've ever witnessed, wish I didn't care about Everton right now!

Lets hope we get some new owners who are strong but i agree with bill and his band of hangers on he is as safe as houses and maybe with no pressure it is not helping him to be a better manager
There's more chance of me running a4minute mile and I ain't far off a pension....feet don't fail me now!!!!!!

If our defending wasn't awful we'd probably be first or second. When was the last time we didn't score in a game? And yet we have only won 6 all season.

I think bringing up a league win is a red herring. We're not going to do that and any manager judged on his ability to do that will be found wanting.

I do think that Martinez is getting a lot of things right in terms of playing youth and getting good attacks going. But we're a long long way off a league title.

And if I'm honest with you, I think we're further away from one now then we were when martinez started here.

No doubting our ability going forward. Stoke hardly ever concede away from home, and we put 3 past them with ease. We're the best attacking team in the league bar City in my opinion - and unless we win a cup it looks like being a crap season. It's mind-boggling and depressing at the same time.

your CM achievements pail in significance to what i've achieved on FM mate!

but seriously, i wouldn't go around claiming to be "able to do a better job" than someone who's won the FA Cup with minnows.

Good point, but I'd rather not pin my hopes and dreams for Everton on a man that relegated the same minnows in his quest for perfect football.

Certain people blind themselves to the defensive shortcomings. They say 'it's the best we've attacked since the 80s' and blind themselves that we've been absurdly torn apart defensively. Martinez picks the team. He thinks Howard is good enough. He thinks playing Barry every game is a good idea(for the record I think he's been mostly excellent all season but he shouldn't post every match).

There's not a lot of pragmatism. It's extremes on both sides. If a manager is either unable or unwilling to see these shortcomings (going on almost 16 months at this point), I feel it fair to question whether they should be or manager. Don't think it should be done tomorrow or even this season, but to try to completely discredit others arguments with ad hominem's is a bit ridiculous.

Oh no doubt we are a long way off. I'm just trying to look at this with a bigger picture view for the long term.

I will disagree with your last point. It may appear that way at the moment, and you might ultimately end up being right, but I think we are incredibly close.
