Roberto Martinez discussion

But which players are letting us down?

I'm not pinning the defending on the players. It's obvious how they little time they spend on organising themselves at Finch Farm. It's also Martinez' fault that we've got a kid at centre half partnered by an Argentinian easing himself into the league.

Is it the boss' fault that Jags got injured?

I'm pretty sure that there was no way Funes Mori was intended to play so many games so soon. Not that I can know for sure of course.

He did have 10 years...and some shaky ones at the beginning.

Add to that Martinez is building through youth unlike Moyes.

I reckon it's the only chance we have of actually winning the league going the route Martinez is going. Buying young...giving them time on the pitch to learn. Hopefully it all comes together and we win stuff.

In today's world, that is the only way Everton have a chance of winning the league.
This simply isn't true. Not even slightly. Moyes did build a young squad, with arteta, Fellaini, baines, jags, yakubu, lescott etc all 24 or under when signed. Add in gosling, Rodwell, anichebe etc and you'll see that the team circa 2008/9 was probably significantly younger than this one. Its a bit easier to build a young side when you can splash £28m on one player than when you go 2 years without making a cash signing though, so it's not surprising that moyes couldn't keep doing it.

For all the supposed youth orientated approach, it's worth noting that Howard and barry have just been asked to complete 180 minutes in 3 days with a combined age somewhere around the amount of goals we're set to concede this season. We also picked 4 central midfielders on the bench rather than promoting an attacking youth prospect. Look at how moyes used Baxter, vellios, Mcaleney, Chadwick etc as part of his squad - Martinez has only given (very limited) opportunities to browning from our academy that I can think of.

They get the instruction from the manager. If the manager intends to attack and try to get the 4th goal will they do the opposite, I guess not. The most sensible thing to to bring on Besic for Kone or Del when the score was 3-2 and close the game out like we did when Moyes was here. It might be boring but we get a win.

What if they don't follow the instructions he gives properly?

Injuries were bound to happen. Jags is over 30 and Stones was bound to have a loss of form given his age.

It's absolutely Martinez' fault for not bringing in an established centre half at the start of the season. It's also completely his fault for why we're so diabolical at the back. He inherited one of the best defensive units in the league, now we're a laughing stock, and that's not hyperbole either.

It's the bosses fault he lost 2 experienced centre backs and replaced them with one young one.

Stones and Funes Mori playing together is leaking goals because they're both young and noone experienced is there to help them out. If Martinez had grabbed a 30 year old back up like Huth cheaply as well as funes mori, we'd be better off.

He didn't, that's on him.

Bang on with that.
I just don't understand his take on keepers

Unlikely is it? Martinez is the manager they aren't. And he doesn't make the defensive sub like Besic or Gibson for Kone etc to pack up the midfield.

One game not following his instruction maybe certainly not a couple of games.

Agree with that to an extent (if we are considering Galloway / Stones as not Academy), but Barkley is arguably the biggest counter to that [though I think he would have made it under Moyes as well]. It is is certainly a bit of a falsehood to say that only Martinez used younger players.

What for me makes no sense is that this Everton side is setup with a foundation of goalkeeper + four defenders + two midfielders in a defensive position... and yet we are leakier than we have ever been!
