Roberto Martinez discussion

Agree with that. It comes to something when this pretty erratic Arsenal team is a hot favourite for the title.

There's a definite equalisation process going on in the top half of the table. It's proven frustrating for us up to this point of the season, hopefully we can show a clean pair of heels to the others in that group of 10 from now until May. I think we will too.

Yes, but as you've said at the same token lots of sides are better. Even look at Villa, they have spent 50 million on players this summer. Huge fees for a side sunk at the Botton. Sunderland have players like Lens playing for them. Stoke have 3 former champions league final players in there.

I think we will. I see us finishing top half. I know a lot of people won't like it, but there s not point sacking Martinez for 10th. It is below par and a poor season. But what I would say, is I am against change for changes sake. A club like ours does need to be very cautious with our managers (and in all aspects). Villa, Newcastle and Sunderland are not deceptively smaller than us and all could go down this season.

It was partly that logic why I never called for Moyes to go. Sure at times it was mind numbing under him. I just never felt he did a bad enough job to warrant a pretty extreme course of action for the sack. I know lots of people who'd have happily had us with Coyle, Jewell or Phil Brown at various points.

There's not a lot I'd say for Kenwright but I admire his strength and common sense re manager and not reacting to the modern knee-jerk culture.

Just how much time should a manager like RM be given ? one season , two, three ?

Should he have sold the young players that were in demand during the summer like Stones, McCarthy , Coleman and possibly Barkley and instead signed solid more experienced premiership players.

I think the manager is trying to build a team almost from the ground up and that takes longer.

Whats ball said, do you have a link?

He basically said that we have seen over the last few games hasn't been good enough. That there is a lack of a winning mentality and were dead easy to play against because we play the same players and deploy the same tactic every match. He also spoke about our lack of threat from set pieces.

West Bron won 2 points less than us this calendar year.Stoke Leicester and Palace have won more points so far this calendar year than us.49 points in the period from January to Christmas. That just isn't good enough considering the talent in this squad and serious questions have to be asked despite the protestations of the plotters who want to leave Martinez in charge at all costs.See two can play the plotting game.:D

If Moyes had got midtable finishes but given the two cups all we had to offer in the 11 seasons he was here I'd have had less of a problem with him.

I still dont get what people see in a top half finish that lands outside the CL spots. It's not only useless, it's worse than useless, because it lands you with the great possibility of having to play in that energy sapping season destroying nightmare AKA the EL the following season.

We're not getting a CL spot without huge investment. Attractive attacking football and giving the cups a a real go is the way to go for this club. I think Martinez suits that remit down to the ground.

I honestly think it's the 'season of surprise packages.'

The mercurial talents, the ones that are unstoppable, are all on the continent (Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, Bale, suarez, (a few Bayern players, etc)

Going into this season, one would have said Rooney, Aguero, Toure -Y-, Hazard, Fabregas etc are the best players in the league. However, have they been worked out?

Out of all the players in this league, it's been the unexpected ones who have shone the most (perhaps excluding Lukaku and Ozil)

No team seems to fear too many players. I think that's why the league is so unpredictable. The so-called superstars of the prem just aren't scaring anybody, and this season is a free for all.

It's telling that perhaps Del has been so effective as a surprise package. There's very fine margins at play, and it's the teams with the surprises up their sleeve who seem to be prospering most from the situation.

Didn't last season when he went out of both cups in the first round, especially after fielding a joke team away at a very decent Swansea side at the time. But yeah because we've stumbled past a load of lower league sides we're taking it seriously this season.

He did give a cup the big push...unfortunately it was the EL one.

This season I think we'll go close in one or both domestic cups. That should be our objective each year, not obsessing about 5th-7th place no mark finishes. We've been there and it's nothing to write home about.

Don't think I've ever known anybody be as excited to be in a carling cup semi as you. You do know we've drawn city don't you?

Europa league doesn't make much difference if your a good enough manager. 3 years in a row we did it not so long ago with no money and an average manager, we even got a cup final during that time as well as consistent high place finishes. Finishing higher up the league gives you amilion pounds per place, and Europe gives you access to better players.

Being in Europe is just an excuse for those that need one.

Do you think he's in sacking territory mate? If so, who would you replace him with? I'm not being sarcastic, I'm asking a genuine question. You obviously don't rate Martinez, so enlighten us all and tell us who you think should be our manager....

Last season Roberto didn't want the burden of League Cup games on top of the midweek Europa League games.

He thought the number of games would be too many for the squad we had. As the Europa League games did leave our squad tired out, he was proved correct. So he sent out a weakened team at Swansea and the problem was quickly resolved, Well done, Roberto!

Now we're going to have the excitement of two semifinal legs against Manchester City. As we have seen, City are by no means unbeatable. I can hardly wait.

Check my vote on Chico's poll. I have made my position clear on this. I am against changing mid season unless relegation is a serious prospect. After three seasons I hope to see signs of progress. This summer will be a good time to judge whether Martinez is worthy of continuing on (clearly the board won't change him so it's largely irrelevant). If he cannot improve our form in the second half of the season then I would want to see change in the summer. If he can display tangible progress then he deserves to carry on in my opinion.

Bizarre post. I remember this miraculous season in 07/08 where we got to a league cup semi, went on a long run in the Europa, came fifth playing good football throughout, blooded some youngsters. Apparently that's impossible now though, Europa involvement automatically results in relegation form (unless your Spurs or Liverpool), you can't mix a cup run with European football, and league form has to be disregarded if you are playing any young players whatsoever.
