Roberto Martinez discussion

I posted a thread some time ago about our team being in a developmental stage and I think that is still true.

I think recent weeks however have highlighted a couple of issues.
1. The absolute importance to us of Phil Jagielka being in the team, hugely underrated for club and country. John Stones also looks a far better player when Jagielka is in the team.

2. The absolute importance to us of James McCarthy being in the team, as above hugely underrated and is vital to our team.

Both of those players missing has left our core of talented youngsters a little exposed.

Some of our play is excellent but defensively we have become shambolic. Stones is not yet experienced enough to be a leader in the back four and Funes Mori needs more time to get used to our league , players with bucketloads of potential but at the moment they need a rock like Jakielka to play alongside.
Having a goalkeeper whose form is questionable at times is not helping either.

“We need to learn quickly. That was the biggest problem from getting a good result or not.

“We need to become a bit more experienced and develop quicker know-how of what you need in a game which Leicester had. They knew exactly what they were doing. They knew how to control the frustration of the fans, how to control the restarts and that was a real contrast of two teams in that point of view. One with a lot of talent and a lot of young, ambitious players but who need to develop know-how quickly.”

This part of his comments after the match. He has been manager now for two and a half seasons and comes out with this guff. What the heck have you been doing Roberto during that time waiting for fairy Godmother? Notice it is all "we" meaning the players never I. Does he ever tale any responsibilty for things hat have gone wrong.

Unbelievable post match comments.

While I don't bother with his interviews any more. You're being unfair with your criticism here. I'm pretty sure him not taking responsibility would mean he said "they" (the players), not "we" (both him and the players).

Because really it was both parties fault. The players practically gave Leicester all 3 goals, the third being the most embarrassing, not a lot the manager can do about that. He is responsible, however, for making the right changes and turning the game around which he didn't do on the weekend.

We were a defensive mess with them in the team tbf. I expect them to come in and change very little defensively, just enough perhaps to change the odd draw into a win, but not enough to mask the inefficiencies of our defence.

Mostly I expect us to consolidate on our poor season last season and get roughly the same level, perhaps a tiny bit better, i'll be honest though.. With the squad he has helped build, give him one more Summer and I think we could actually see the real thing.

Going forwards we are good, the rest of it all needs huge amounts of work, he's clearly a work from front to back kind of guy and the attacking side of the centre circle is now pretty decent.

Rest of the pitch needs crazy amounts of attention which a pre season and a few signings could truly make the difference with.

It's worth noting though, that we're only 2 points less off than last season when both were in the side.

If , on Christmas Eve you met Roberto Martinez in your local pub and you had a very private chat with him over a few scoops I am sure that in private he would admit to many of the failings and shortcomings of his team that fans complain about.

As manager he cannot say anything negative in public. The recent example at Chelsea shows how important the bond between a manager and his players is.

I have no doubt that he will be making plans with his coaching staff to strengthen certain areas.

In the summer when the seasons over? He has already said he doesn't buy in January for the first team anyway.
