Roberto Martinez discussion

Fantastic post. No matter what the PAST results have been, were 6pts off champions league. That is a great position to be in with half a team of young players and a very poor number of players outside of 9 or 10.

On paper, just imagine this first eleven once Martinez brings in 3 more players GK, LW,CM and in addition to the highly rated youth coming through adds some quality on the bench. This has the makings of a fantastic dynasty for us.

Spurs who have got so many plaudits than us have won...2 more games than us I think?

I think we need:

A goalkeeper (coming summer)
A player who both a) links with Rom and b) provides defensive cover for Baines. Kone does a) but not b) and Mirallas is more defensive but far more selfish
A replacement for Barry.

But back to Bobby: I don't think firing him is going to bringg about any upturn in results or performance and I think people need to not overrate and overreact

He turns every thread into a transfer wish list and youth team toss off. And that quoting. Christ that quoting. I just refuse to ignore it until it is stopped.

Martinez likes to play from the back.

Normal people know the sort of stuff Zat posts and either read it, cos they find it interesting, or skip over it, because they've seen it all before.

Once you've got over the hurdle of deciding which side of the Zat fence you're on it becomes perfectly bearable. The lad's grown on me. He occasionally makes some valid points too. Not often admittedly, but then again who does ?

Get over it.

Just please make him quote in the correct manner and spare our eyes the plague.

Martinez is an advocate of possession togger.

I think this exposed full back issue is not the fault of Kone or Del, should not have them concentrating on defending when you have two DM as it is designed for one of them to slot into the wide areas when we are short. They did this fantastically in Martinez's first season but now don't seem to be as quick to cover Baines and Seamus.

Yes precisely those players...Martinez i think needs time to bring these types in as well and usually only signs one or two first eleven players per window.

In terms of a "blip" i think if you look at the league at the moment everyone has a chance to win and but for the Man Utd result we would be level with them.

Spurs again like you mention are not far ahead but in the same vein Newcastle are 3pts behind if they beat us...the league is just so open.

The irony i think is that if Moyes was manager we would probably be in the race for the league title as we would be grinding out results!!!

Martinez' tactics are a bit odd here. He's had Barry at DM and McCarthy in CM but really, like you say should have them both covering the full backs when they charge up the pitch. Basically were using potentially the best DM in the league (McCarthy) at CM and our slowest player at DM...

The thing is, for all Barrys performances and running statistics this season has he been effective in preventing goals-- i dont think he has and thats mainly due to his lack of pace meaning he physically cant cover the full back or track back. For me, we need to try McCarthy in DM instead of Barry but the problem is that there is no CM player who can perform the box-to-box role nor a playmaker whose presence would mean the opposition couldnt commit too many players forward. I hope Ledson is next off the conveyor belt for us and Besic can force his way into the team as then Ledson,Besic and McCarthy have the legs which we lack in Barry.

The other thing is that teams are now playing 2 in the centre and if we were to match this then Barry would be a massive liability as teams would just run past him like Germany did but even more so now hes older.

Martinez i think is gradually building the team in his vision so it will be interesting to see what he does in the centre. Have McCarthy and Barkley been played in different roles to improve their all round game like with Lukaku last season?

In terms of Deulofeu hes playing the traditional winger role and looking good with Coleman behind. Galloway had 2 vs 1 situations due to Kone being miles away...this could end up a disaster for us with Baines seeking to bomb on leaving us exposed with Barrys ageing legs as cover...

Its a worry and something Martinez needs to address...probably in the summer.

Tbh i really think with a decent amount of money Martinez could do some amazing business in the transfer market. It seems he's a bit hit and miss on the squad players but when he identifies a first eleven or a young player he does very well.

Just imagine, we could have got Martial a couple of Januarys ago and also Yarmolenko last summer.

Yeah but would he sort out our defensive issues even with a blank cheque?

Easy to play nice football going forward when its just what the opposition wants us to do. Leaving ourselves wide open at the back.
Most teams have 4 to 6 players ready to clear crosses when they come in. Not us, we have one or two at most.
Other teams double up on defending wide players - not us.

Alcaraz & mcGeady not fantastic - Eto i have seen one of the worlds top footballers in a Everton kit, that will do for me.
When we signed Lukaku I was over the moon, when I heard the fee I though it was 8ml too much - shows what I know.
RM wants to build something around young exciting players who want to play the game the right way - that doesn't happen quickly, but sadly in today's game supporters want everything quickly.
If it does click we will have something special to support
