If Tim Howard was from Liverpool, would he get as much abuse?
That's the other question.
He'd get more, much more my American friend.

Last year he was telling them to koff, pretty sure he knows how unpopular he isDid anyone see him telling the Gwladys to calm down against Palace last week?
I think it is clear to him that the fans don't like him.
Fair enough if he was Buffon, but he is an atrocious goalkeeper.Last year he was telling them to koff, pretty sure he knows how unpopular he is
I like to keep my football simplistic, found it odd it wasn't even mentioned on MOTD,every keeper gets his positioning all wrong from time to time, but TH gets pilloried for it,yet our two centre backs (one of whom it's alleged is dominant in the air) who week after week get mugged at set pieces get a free ride.A pretty simplistic comparison do you not think? Overall Butland has been in form this season, therefore less likely to be criticised for an error.
Howard on the other hand has not been in form at all, and personally I'd suggest he is now regularly suspect in many aspects of his game.
I'm not suggesting our current defensive frailties are all his fault, but I do think he is becoming a significant aspect of it.
Arguably a good keeper underpins their defence through their communication, management and performance: this instils confidence.
Howard far too often flaps at balls, or simply doesn't come out at all being static on his line. Nor does he effectively communicate with his defence.
Therefore no wonder we're conceding from so many set pieces or crosses. Obviously the defenders have aspects of culpability, but it's mainly Tim.
That's not being sensationalist, overly critical or part of some vendetta against him. It's just the facts and I was a long time admirer of Tim.

Hey, hey, I'm in agreement with you. I imagine Dougie is too, the time for a good new keeper is upon us, but we are merely railing against those who can't see past their hatred and Anti-American bile to see that Howard has been okay between the posts for us this season. A balanced, unbiased opinion is all Team Tim ask for.
Interesting to see Butland flapping at a last minute cross at WHam that could have lost them the game.Reading this thread I thought it was only Howard who did that.
As I mentioned earlier, the defenders aren't blameless and it isn't all Tim's fault. Nor can I explain why Butland's mistake wasn't highlighted.I like to keep my football simplistic, found it odd it wasn't even mentioned on MOTD,every keeper gets his positioning all wrong from time to time, but TH gets pilloried for it,yet our two centre backs (one of whom it's alleged is dominant in the air) who week after week get mugged at set pieces get a free ride.
I think you misunderstood my post a little,I mentioned Butland only because he's been put forwards on the forum by more than a few members as the type of keeper to cure for all our ills,as if there are a group of young keepers out there who command the box when any cross comes over.Howard has been with us for a fair while and I don't think anyone could accuse him of ever being at his best with crosses.Your point "His decision making, or lack of, arguably puts pressure on his defenders which is not conducive for them to have a good performance." really means whatever happens on the pitch in our half will be by default his fault. If a keeper isn't strong on crosses into the box(and there are lots of them other than TH) then logically the coaches should set the team up for him to stay on his line and let the defenders attack the ball.Something our defenders don't do nearly enough. And as for "Howard is fairly pilloried.".....that made me grin.As I mentioned earlier, the defenders aren't blameless and it isn't all Tim's fault. Nor can I explain why Butland's mistake wasn't highlighted.
Yet, this isn't the issue of one mistake versus another as you are attempting to suggest it is; be that intentionally or inadvertently.
Tim has been consistently making a number of errors over a substantial period of time now. Butland hasn't hence why Howard is fairly pilloried.
I can accept an individual blip, or even a poor run. Yet for too long he's underperformed which the fans, opposition and press alike have noticed.
He's far too often stationary when balls comes into the box, maybe partly due to his lack of confidence in the air (the ol' flapping tendency).
Then there's the lack of communication: how many times are there issues between him and defenders? Most games both home and away!
Just yesterday was another occasion when he threw the ball out to a defender, who was in a poor position, and was immediately closed down.
His decision making, or lack of, arguably puts pressure on his defenders which is not conducive for them to have a good performance.
That's not taking away blame from defenders or other players, as they've their own faults, but I genuinely see him as a pivotal factor for our woes.
Be it his movement, communication, catching or distribution (kicking or throwing) there are now concerns on a weekly basis.
Joel isn't a top class keeper in himself, but I think his position in the team would alleviate a lot of issues as it would put confidence in others.
A strong, confident keeper such as Butland or Adrián would put us a huge advantage.
Time will tell, although it gets a bit confusing if you read through the thread, some say he's always been rubbish on crosses others that it's only the last few seasons, others that he's always been useless at every part of his game. I remember Hennessey being touted as someone we should buy when he was at Wolves, then not,and now he is again.I'm going to sit on the fence and say it's down to Martinez,he sees him everyday in training and picks him so......if butland will still be doing it 15 years down the line like howard's being down, there'd be a reason to knock him there.
