Computer games.

Id just like to say this forum is a breath of fresh air, literally every other forum i post on which has a gaming thread has some bell ends constantly bumping it trying to whore out their rubbish youtube gaming channel'

"HAY GUYS, Going Live in 10 minutes, come and watch me play fallout 4, it'll be awesome, DONT FORGET TO LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE"

FUUUUUUME

What is with the desperation to have people watch you play a game ? Where did this bizarre culture of people spending their spare time on the internet watching other people play video games come from.

Im getting old

They get money from views. Advertising and the like.

Rocket League > FIFA or PES.

tl;dr Rocket League review coming.

I have played FIFA and I own PES.

But I play Rocket League more than both of them combined.

The learning curve on Rocket League is just a fascinating experience. You start off thinking "right ... footie with cars ... this is a bit of fun" and you laugh because you miss the ball (a lot ... like more than 50% of the time somehow) and it's all a bit Mario Karty. Fun but not a lot of depth and I bet I get sick of this soon.

As you keep going it becomes massively more complex. As you rank up you start seeing a whole new game.

The Rocket League I play now has almost nothing in common with the Rocket League I started playing a few months ago. It's the same game (well they have mutator mode now but it's essentially the same) in a literal sense but an entirely different game for me.

Some of the strategy is just light years ahead of anything I'd use in FIFA or PES. That's not to say it doesn't exist in those games but you have the teams used (Barca v. Sunderland) and other variables (goalie people often choose not to control etc.) which really diminish true strategy.

Rocket League also doesn't have much cheese or spawn killing etc. There are a few tricks (kick offs maybe) but largely you don't just get killed by 13 year olds who know all the spawns and cheesy things because the game doesn't have a lot of that stuff to exploit. I HATE playing online for this reason (I don't have the time to learn all the cheese and spawns etc. myself) but Rocket League seems almost entirely free of that kind of nonsense. So refreshing.

I also know enough now to know there is a THIRD game played mostly in the air that I haven't played yet (because I'm not good enough) but I'm really interested in trying to get there.

I know a lot of people like just moving around some grass as an Everton player -- I do too! It's why people can't put up with PES. So the fact Rocket League doesn't have ANY teams or players at all means it doesn't look like football. But it's more football than FIFA or PES. I know that sounds silly but in terms of how the games *feel* ... I feel more like I am competing in a sport playing Rocket League than either FIFA or PES. I'm not talking about graphically but in terms of how it makes my brain feel. I know that sounds weird.

Rocket League, past a certain level, feels like playing a sport. FIFA and PES are games to me.

Anyway ... it's great. If anyone wants to get an Everton team going I'd be down (although I am in North America so be ping aware).

Gotta admit mate I had much the same thoughts as you. Two things changed my mind.

1) I watched some of them. Seems like a simple thing but it was something I hadn't actually done. I watched the big deal streamers (not just some 13 year old shouting misogyny and homophobia all the time). Some of them are genuinely funny (a lot are just shouty but if you dig there is good stuff); some do mods and stuff which is genuinely interesting to watch since you can essentially make a mini movie for people to watch (which people do) ... it's not all watch a game and someone says "and now I am moving into the store to get supplies."

2) You can actually learn a lot. I get if you just play games for an hour every other night you wouldn't care but for people actually trying to improve their skills some of them can be very helpful indeed.

... that said a lot of them are, without a doubt, unwatchable garbage.

Some of the money these people make is absolutely insane.

Each of those are from single individuals, usually accumulative. Then he sold a load of tosh t-shirts from which he took a $14 cut, sold 2,000 in three weeks.

Unfortunately, my careers adviser didn't say 'play computer games for a living and retire at 30'

I know the top guys make great money but i honestly think id rather make less money and not have to cringe whilst telling people 'I run a youtube gaming channel' when they ask what i do for a living... i suppose i could just lie but id still hate myself for it.

If they are happy to do it then all good but its probably the cringiest job title in the world.

Because I'm a bad geek I have recently taken to recording myself playing games, and uploading them on youtube for people (not) to watch. I know a fair amount of ppl on here don't 'get' the point, but if you would like to laugh at me being not very good at Banished or Civ 5 feel free to take a look - https://www.youtube.com/user/kaibayashi/videos. You get to see my face and listen to my weird annoying (to me at least) voice. Oh yeah, and also I am playing the games from a 'vegan' perspective

More bad geekiness - Civ 5 this time:

:o oops! :o

If they make decent money then why cringe? Guy I watch a lot of used to work as a coder, gave it up to do Youtube full time. He's not make big bucks like Pewdiepie etc, but his content/style is a lot more grown up, him and has mates get exclusive looks at games (especially Paradox stuff) and he makes roughly what he did in a 'proper' job. In ten years it probably won't seem weird at all. Either that or Youtube will have followed countless other sites that have disappeared into oblivion! :o
