Everton Youth Teams Thread

Jonjoe Kenny says he is ready to play wherever he is required as Everton Under-21s take on Norwich City on Tuesday evening. The versatile 18-year-old has recently returned from two months on loan at Wigan Athletic, where he impressed at right-back. Now back with the young Blues for the time being, Kenny could feature in a more central role against the Canaries at Southport’s Merseyrail Community Stadium.

The Kirkdale-born Academy graduate told evertonfc.com: "I love playing for Everton at any level and in any position, so when I was asked to play for the Under-21s against Manchester United last week, I was more than happy to.
"I am a natural right-back, but if Unsy needs me at centre-half, I’ll play wherever I’m needed.” Kenny made six starts and one substitute appearance at the League One Latics, an experience he savoured after seeing a number of his teammates head out on loan last term.

Indeed, the England Under-18 international hopes to have impressed enough to earn another similar opportunity in the near future."I really enjoyed it,” he added. "I loved every minute. It was a great experience for me - playing in front of crowds, playing for points. It was very physical. They’re all men at that level. "I came back from Singapore in pre-season with the first team and got told I was going out on loan the next day, so I was buzzing. I was waiting for that chance and hopefully I took it well.

David Unsworth and Joe Royle came to most of my games and gave me advice on what I was doing well and what I could improve on. It was good having them around."I’m going to stay here and get a few games and see if I can get back out on loan again. I loved every minute of it, so I’ve got to be patient and see what happens."

Final Score 3-1

Everton Under-21s returned to winning ways with a 3-1 victory against Norwich City on Tuesday evening.

The young Blues had already defeated sides in two cup competitions this season, but, after four draws and one loss, were still looking for their first three-point haul in the league.

And, just like the first team 24 hours earlier, David Unsworth’s side had to come from behind to get their reward. Jonjoe Kenny’s penalty on the brink of half time canceled out Jamar Loza’s spot-kick, before Mason Holgate and Callum Connolly completed the fight-back midway through the second period.

Everton began the brighter of the two sides, with Sam Byrne, Calum Dyson and Gethin Jones going close before the Canaries worked their way into the game midway through the half.

The Under-21s used the rule which permits a quota of overage players to hand valuable minutes to Bryan Oviedo, as well as Brazilian right-back Felipe Mattioni Rohde, who is currently working with the team.

And it was the latter who had an impact in both penalty areas in the first half; first conceding the foul which allowed Loza to open the scoring on 32 minutes, before a marauding run drew the tackle that gave Kenny the chance to level from 12 yards.

With Loza striking the foot of the post just moments before and Conor McGrandles forcing a superb reflex save from Mateusz Hewelt, the Blues will have been relieved for it to have been all square at the interval.

Yet in the second period it was all Everton.

Joe Williams, Oviedo and Mattioni all had chances in the early stages, while Hewelt was needed again to deny Benny Ashley-Seal.

Then, on 64 minutes, Byrne’s drive forced a corner which was knocked down into the path of Holgate and the former Barnsley teenager was in the right place to convert from close range to grab his first goal in the royal blue.

The newfound lead would be extended just 120 seconds later when defensive midfielder Connolly drove through the centre of the park and unleashed a low effort into the bottom corner.

Dyson hit the post late on, but the damage was done and the Blues had their first league win of the campaign, lifting them up to fifth in the table.

Everton Under-21s now face a break from competitive action, with their next outing set for Friday 16 October at Middlesbrough.

started the one before last night
Odd though not to start him if there's no game for nearly three weeks. England U19s are in action next week, it will be interesting to see if he's a late call up to the squad . When he does play he seems to be getting the same good reviews as he was getting last season. Who knows what's going on, but I trust the club to manage the youngsters in the best way.

I like Connolly, he sums up the kind of player we are good at producing and developing in this age group. He can score goals playing at left back or left midfield and looked quite comfortable in a back 3 in the 2nd half against Liverpool. He's like a left sided Kenny , but a bit taller. Not sure what his best position will be, probably left back, hope to see him do well for Englandu19s in October.

Kenny and Connolly named in England U19 squad, no Ledson, Dowell presumably still injured , not sure what's happened to Liam Walsh who was a fringe member U18 last season.
Russell Griffiths ( apparently back on loan at Colwyn Bay) and Mason Holgate in u20s squad.
We have nobody in the current U16 or 17 squads which seems unusual given our U18s good start to the season.
Edit: LL types faster than me !
