John Stones transfer saga

This except for the last line. We're bound to sell. They need to make sure that they do it at the best price and with time to get a half decent replacement........

With respect, no we are not bound to sell.
Everyone outside GP, oh and DaveK, wants to sell, but we are under no obligation or pressure to do so at all.
What can anyone else do to us ????

We do look a bit daft saying nothing.

But it's not exactly easy what to say. We could say it's been refused and look stupid when we sell him.

The silence says quite a lot.

No, the club would look stupid if they commented on every rumour generated by 'Sky sources'. They've made their position more than clear - he is not for sale. Why do they need to reiterate this now?

If Stones really has handed in a transfer request, I would hope that Martinez/Bill would realise they hold all the cards.

They should have phoned Chelsea up yesterday and told them "Stones has handed in a transfer request, he's on a 4 year contract, he's going to be the best English CB and one of the best in the world. All this and timing considered, you have until the end of the day to submit a £60m bid for him. Any less will be rejected and any later will not be considered as it will be too late to reinvest the money."

Oh who am I kidding, the board don't want to reinvest the money!

Spot on till your very last line.
Stand firm, stay calm, keep quiet !!

I don't think Stones would have handed in a transfer request if it wasn't pretty much all sorted already. It'll just go through the motions now. We are being silent because there's nothing to say in terms of refusing the deal.

I understand what you are saying but, generally, when a player wants to leave a club these days that tends to be what happens......

He's gone, give it up. He wouldn't have put in a request if there wasn't a deal on the table.

With respect, written by someone with no knowledge of how these things work.
I've been in professional sport and involved in player transfers, swaps etc and nothing is as cut and dried as you suspect.

Agree with @BlockHead here, though I did want a statement yesterday I feel one now would just complicate matters.

I think we'll know more after the game tonight, but we hold all the cards. It's down to the club to take advantage of that.

And, if the rumour that the request was a good few days ago (before the City game) is true, then obviously the 'done deal' is no where near as done as some might think.
