John Stones transfer saga

I wouldn't argue. But he's been fully involved in this from day one. It sounds like he's put a transfer request in on the sly last week, then when it was knocked back he's gone public with it.

He's 21 years of age. He's old enough to carry the can on this. He's not a child. Bollocks to him, I want this feller out of Everton right now. There's no way back for a snake like that, not at this club. We all know it too.

Starting to possibly understand Tyias' tackle at the weekend...at the time it made no sense. Stones didn't want any part of it when he got up and didn't rush back to help. Borders on conspiracy but it made no sense to me at the time as Stones had the coverage.

Fair comment, but you can only react to a situation. I'm sure RM was selling him the story all along - as I've said you can't imagine he hadn't seen the potential that Stones would be tapped up this window, but you can only have the real conversation (the one you hope you don't have to have) once the trigger has been pulled. If RM emerges today with his arm around Stones saying 'we have agreed he will stay and play', that will be good enough for me that Stones will be entirely professional about it.

Unfortunately the chances of this actually happening is a different question, and I'm not too confident personally that even the brown shoe shuffle will work its magic this time....
I don't see that mate, once he's requested a transfer his mind is made up, unless Chelski let him down. He should have been reassured by the board, and the situation managed by our manager imo.

When the window closes things will settle very quickly. I think Stones will accept the situation and get back to playing for Everton, I think it will be agreed that next summer he will be allowed to leave if a club matches his valuation.
That gives Stones another year at Everton , gives Everton another year to find his replacement and to give Browning plenty of first team football.

I'd say there's a third.

We tell him he's not going because the transfer request came too late and we haven't received a bid to match his valuation, and tell the player we'll revisit in 12 months.

The player is aware of when he's leaving and the club has a year ahead of time to plan out the strategy moving forward.

That's actually the only viable option in my head if the club is ran remotely right.
Not the only viable option, but I'd be cool with it. I'm sure he'd still do his best because apart from anything else, if he had a
poor season Chelsea and other clubs might be put off.
I was surprised to read here that he's only on 30k a season. Rooney was on 35k when he left ten years ago. I'd give the lad a
big pay rise right now and say we'll look at it again next year.
And anyway, if he does go - and I'd make Chelsea pay the full whack, 36-40 mil' - Funes Mori might fill in very nicely.

Remember when we sold a 10 goal a season defensive partner to a local rich club on the basis we couldn't replace him?

Silvan Distin disagrees with that. So yeah Stones can be replaced in the team, have done before, can do again.

I understand the logic mate, but there really is no way back for someone who hands a transfer request in. You could say Suarez over there did it, but he was a goal machine and hero worshipped. Stones is a defender prone to costly errors. Can you see him being forgiven this season if he stays and we're shipping goals at the rate we have since last season?

His last game for Everton was against Man City. Absolutely no question in my mind.
I don't often agree with you but I do on this.

Now he's handed in the transfer request I think we're better off with the money than a CB who doesn't want to be here.

I'm not going to be one of those fans that starts slating Stones' ability saying he wasn't as good as we originally made out etc. because quite frankly he is and I am/was really excited to see how he'd develop and how our team would develop. Did I ever think he'd stay with us forever? No of course not, unless we somehow became a regular CL team then he was always going to leave. Did I think he'd leave now? Not a chance, he seemed much more level-headed and mature to do that. He will be missed and I can't say I won't resent him a little every time he plays for another team after this.

I just feel the manner in which this has been handled all summer has been absolutely piss poor by the club and we as fans - moreso those that pay considerable amounts each year to watch these players - are being treat with a complete lack of respect with their veiled promises and forlorn hope that we're a growing club.

Quite frankly this whole issue has upset me more than a sport really should but hey, that's football. I just hope now we as fans get the explanations we deserve but I know I'm clutching at almost invisible straws there.

I see this from the angle of us not him. I dont care what he thinks. He's a player we gave a massive break to and worked hard to get him where he is right now.

The only person Everton supporters should have any empathy with right now is Martinez. He's the one been told by a player who stated in July he was delighted to be at Everton...then in the last week or so he's put the man who brought him through right in it.

I have contempt for Stones. He's not solely to blame, but he is to blame nevertheless.

He needs punting asap. No place for that sort at this club.

In fairness Mirallas all but handed a request in earlier this year, yet he's still here and we'll all be right behind him.

While it's bad form from Stones (especially this late), I would have no problem with him staying another year. We're not in a position with the squad depth at the moment (esp in such a key position) to be chucking players out.

If he goes, make sure we get our valuation. If he stays, fine. Integrate him back into the team and make sure he plays to the best of his ability. He needs game time if he wants a move next year - which means he will have to play well.

It's the only outcome now. Stones is the past.

I just hope Martinez gets the cash and has major preparations in place for this so he can move very quickly getting four in before the window shuts.

You could be right mate, but I would fully expect RM to take the time - let's say 24 hours max - to try all he can to persuade him anyway....

He was pretty emphatic, if it comes to light that we sell the player - regardless of a transfer request (if the board told him to put one in or not), then he was a liar. simple as. He flat out said we wont be selling him, if the lad has put in a transfer request the club sets is stall and says sorry John, you are staying we reject it.

If the club has fabricated this and forced the issue to deflect blame... where does that leave us.

You really think it would come as THAT much of a surprise to them.....?

Yes, I do feel this request has come as a surprise to them.

Or certainly the publicising of it.....which we now know to be the work of his agent.

I am coming to the conclusion that the press were right over the weekend and that a request had been submitted.

But it was turned down and the club had no intention of selling him ax per the manager's statements.

That would explain Woods saying what he said.

Then the agent went nuclear.

So, if that us indeed the case nowt has changed.

The board can shoot this request down.....it is still in their power.

Just man up and do it, Everton.

(BTW I attach no credence to this airy fairy notion about the board "forcing" a transfer request to "make Stones look bad")

Formally handing in a transfer request is a game changer, especially right at the end of a window with little time for Everton to recover from it.

He stays: first disastrous error he makes = he'll be slaughtered. And rightly so.

Theres no future here for him. He's gone.
