John Stones transfer saga

There is nothing obvious about that scenario. Fits your narrative, but goes against all facts we currently have: The club don't want to sell; Chelsea have increased the amount they have offered; Stones has put in a transfer request.

Or: The club didn't want to sell, Chelsea increased their bid, Everton now do want to sell, club tells Stones to be a good lad and hand in the request.

If he goes the board need more than a stick to beat them with, it's criminal not for sale should mean not for sale!

Strange though it might sound I think this is more important than when Rooney was sold. We were skint then, this time we don't have to sell to survive. As it stands now, we should only be selling players when that's right for us in a footballing sense rather than because the books demand it.

Though every player undoubtedly has their price, when you get to this point in the transfer window, any rational Blue would have to doubt the merits of allowing Stones to go right now. By all accounts, Chelsea have already offered 30 million. To replace Stones like for like is pretty much impossible, but to get someone in who could fit in and definitely do a job you're probably talking ~ 20 million.

It makes no sense to sell for less than 40 million, and really, you're talking 45 million to be a tipping point which takes into account the fact that you might not be able to spend the money sensibly this window.

Add to that the message it would send out to the squad and the fans then, if we agree to sell Stones in this window then, not only have the board confirmed their lack of ambition, they'll have also sold an asset which is likely to appreciate more than most replacements, which makes very little business sense because it potentially reduces the value of the club.

It's in the boards, and ultimately, Martinez's hands. The easy option is to go down the "Don't want to hold onto an unhappy player" route. The brave option is to stick to our guns, tell Stones he's here till next Summer at which point, if he still wants to leave, he can go to the highest bidder.

Stones will undoubtedly get dogs abuse at Goodison at first if he's held to his contract, so it would be up to him to show us how professional I think he is, and rise above that. A few decent performances though, and he could then just concentrate on his football.

It's very much down to messrs Kenwright, Woods, Martinez and I guess Earl to show they have the balls to stick to their guns. I ain't hopeful, but you never know.

John Stones hasn't just decided, "oh I might go now actually" - it's all been down to Everton.
You don't know that. So many on here are tailoring very little information to fit their narratives about the club, Stones, Chelsea, and Martinez. Currently, you simply haven't got a clue about what's happening (and neither do i or anyone else on this forum frankly).

That fits your desire for Stones to be a decent lad and Everton/Martinez being the panto villain, but that mightn't be the case. Wait and see.

But if he puts minimum effort in he want get in the England squad and will miss the euros next summer
He won't do that. We would probably be best dropping him for Spurs but then there's the international break and that will give him time to think and with the Euros coming up he will know it's best for his career to knuckle down.

Unfortunately Chelsea will probably come back in January and that will be a huge disruption during a difficult fixture list. They also will probably not offer as much however if they only offer us 30m now then that becomes less an issue.

Well, yanno, seeing as there's previous, and that it was known Stones was off over a week ago, it's not too hard to fit it together.

The only silver lining that could emerge from this debacle is that, if Stones is going and we've got a week to sort things out then the board can expect major major discontent (like 10x worse than the past two weeks) if 2 or 3 seriously decent replacements aren't signed in time. And that includes two decent centre-halves.
If we sign two decent centre-halves in the next week I will fall on my sword like Bizman.

'New signings were never dependent on John Stones leaving. Roberto wanted to go into the first five games of the season with an unbalanced squad.'

Why haven't the Everton board signed this kid up to a better deal ages ago? I mean, you can't talk nonstop about how great a talent he is, how he's worth 50million etc and then expect the kid not to have his head turned by a more ambitious club, when you have him on 30k a week. This is huge money to us, but in the football market its criminally under the market value for someone as good as good as Everton have portrayed Stones.

Double his wages and toss on a 60 million-70 million buyout and/or show some intent by buying a few players to help make the push. It's just crazy to think you can talk him up so much but not negatively impact him when you have him on relative subpar wages and told him he is of CL class but shown no ambition of taking the club there.

Considering his u 21 performance and the state of the England national team, might not be a bad idea to miss Euros.
