John Stones transfer saga

I know a lot of people on here have an extremely low opinion of the Everton board and indeed the manager, but how can the board who made absolute statements on Stones future renege now. How can the manager stay in place after his declaration "we are not a selling club".
Part of me wants to believe the club will show some gumption and say he is not for sale, but a bigger part of me thinks they will take the money and blame he player for wanting away.
Yes but saying upteen times not for sale is cringe worthy to any blue fan!

must say I'm quite calm about it. i think my capacity to fume has been spent over so many years of the same nonsense. I believe my first real meltdown was Dean Saunders going to the RS!!

We might get lucky and get a distin type signing - and hopefully blow the rest on some ace playmaker!

The days of being able to do that are well gone.

FIFA have strict rules which in effect mean if a club puts a player in the reserves, or put another way doesn't feature in enough first team games come the end of a season and if the player so desires they can walk away on a free transfer irrespective of how long they have left on their contract
Well I didn't know that, so cheers for the info. I'd still like us to keep him for a season before selling. We should still get a good price. He has to perform or miss out on the Euro's. Its too late in the window to start getting a quality replacement. Just want us to make stand.

“It's always the same question and always the same answer.”

It was only at lunchtime on Tuesday, just before the Everton players arrived at Finch Farm for training, that Roberto Martinez was at pains to reinforce the club’s stance.

The message remained clear: he is not for sale.

Soon after Martinez had spoken, John Stones handed in a transfer request.

And so now, after the young defender has had a change of heart and decided to force through a move to Chelsea, Everton’s resolve will truly be tested.

Martinez, in public and private, has been adamant about Stones’ future, and said last week that the submission of a transfer request would not change that.

Let’s hope that Everton are as good as their word.

Two fingers to Chelsea
Forget tying James McCarthy up to a new deal, bringing the Catalan Kid Gerard Deulofeu back or landing any other signings this summer, telling Stones is he going nowhere would be the best bit of business Everton will do.

It would be a statement.

It would be two fingers to Chelsea who have behaved with arrogance this summer, believing Everton would roll out the red carpet and be thankful for their interest.

It would also be a sign to the supporters that Everton are determined to build a team with Stones right at the heart of it.

But the Blues have to stand firm, resist the wishes of Stones and stand by Martinez, who has fronted their defiance from day one.

You can fully understand why Stones, a future England captain, has been attracted by Chelsea’s interest and would want to go to the Premier League champions.

He wouldn’t be human if he wasn’t.

But what is best for his career, right now, is to stay at Everton. With the European Championships coming up next summer, Stones needs to be playing regularly, Premier League football every week. That’s what he will get at Everton.

It’s near enough guaranteed but at Chelsea, despite what they may be telling him, that is far less certain.

Would Mourinho be as forgiving as Martinez?
Stones is emerging into a wonderful defender, a classy, cultured centre-half in the modern mould.

After being brought to Everton by David Moyes, it has been under Martinez that the 21-year-old has flourished and become the most in-demand defender in the country.

But after less than 50 appearances in the Premier League, Stones is still learning the game. As he did last season, Stones will still make mistakes. Martinez will continue to encourage his risky style of play and accept that mistakes are part of his development.

Will Mourinho be so forgiving? Would he think twice about dropping Stones? This, after all, is a man who substituted his captain at half time in a recent game.

That is not an environment he needs to be going into at this stage of his career.

He obviously feels differently. Not that he’s shown anything less than full commitment to Everton since this sorry saga began.

But now, all that matters, is how Everton feel.

They have been absolutely certain about Stones all summer. If they remain this way - and we hope they do - then Stones stays put.

It is disappointing that Stones has felt the need to hand in a transfer request but both he and the Blues can move on from this.

The question hasn’t changed but the situation has. The answer must remain the same.

I wonder who the runners and riders will be for the Stones auction ? ...if the club do decide to sell this window.
After Pedro I expect Utd would love to put one over Chelsea and will City stand idly by ? Will Arsenal have any interest , God knows they could do with him.

Now that Stones and Chelsea have forced the issue, maybe Everton should take the initiative by ringing Man Untied and encourage them to put in a bid of £50 million to really spark the stupid price auction.

When Luiz went to PSG, they wanted him and Chelsea wanted him gone and it still made £50 million. In this instance we wanted to keep him, they want/now need him, so surely for a younger, better AND English player, £50 million has to be the opening bid !!!

No statement over his transfer request this pm from RM or a member of the board our PR is a disgrace!

In fairness they'd have to meet to discuss it. As good a player Stones may become if you have the option of selling something for more than 10 times the price you paid 18months ago, then you need to involve all parties to decide what's best. It's just the internet age, we all expect instant developments.

The request was only put in this afternoon. In theory it needs to be discussed by Roberto and the board, before its turned down. Why did you expect us to respond within a few hours, and why is it a disgrace that we didn't. It isn't a disgrace at all, you're just looking for any stick at all with which to beat the board.

You may have said this in jest, but it's not unbelievable.

I have been ruminating for a while but cannot understand why a player who knew had so much interest from a team (3 bids FFS) didn't request a transfer before until 7 days to go putting his team which basically put him on the map and a team already short on defenders in jeapordy. This is a time when you want the manager to be strong with strictness and wisdom like AF had or like LVG to knock some sense into him.
