John Stones transfer saga

Absolutely, I don't see why the opinon of Andy Gray is any more valid than any other media person.

The assumption is based on Everton not being able to resist a big bid and there is a price at which most of us would agree that the player should be sold but30-35m is not that price. At 45m-50m it would be hard to turn down.

I think we need to go back to the managers most recent statemewnt. The player is not for sale.
Exactly. I just can't see how we can sell him after Martinez has been quoted in at least 2 press conferences that he's not for sale. We sell him and the club could never meaningfully use that phrase again, without Stones being referenced

Imagine Mourinho doing his weekly shop:

"How much is the toothpaste?"

"That's £3.00 sir"

"I'll give you £1.00"

"Err no, it's £3.00"

"£1.10?"

"No, £3.00"

"£1.20?"

etc etc!

The guys behind in the queue would never get home!

Actually, it's more like

How much is your toothpaste ?

We don't sell toothpaste sir

I'll give you £1. 20

But sir, we don't sell toothpaste

OK then, £1. 50

Can you not get it into your head sir, WE DON'T SELL TOOTHPASTE !!

Well I'll give you £2. 00 then

Not saying we should sell him, I was just giving my answer to a question somebody had posed. of course I agree with you, but money talks and every player has a price.

But, 40M is a collossal fee for a defender and one which not many clubs could afford to turn down if the player was happy to move.

Glad we agree that Stones should not be sold but the thing is i don't think £40m for a defender is colossal any more. By Chelski's own yard stick they either bought or sold (i can't remember which way round it was) David Luiz for more?

But my point still stands. John Stones seems to be a well adjusted lad, a player by all accounts that younger players look up to because of his career progression from Barnsley to Everton Youth to breaking into first team, to first team regular, to bit-part England player in a World Cup Finals to regular long term England player and who knows potentially Everton club captain. For those reasons his long term value to the club's appeal, its younger players and its fans, is worth as much to Everton FC as the RS recognised many years ago when they didn't sell Stevie G-lar to Chelsea. Not necessarily meaning to bring that shower into any Everton discussion but how many times I wonder over the years did players sign for the RS because the influence of playing alongside that lad tipped the balance over them signing for another club. And that's why at this point in this crucial phase of building an exciting young first team squad whether its 30, 40, 50, or 60 million its irrelevant to me. We want young players (or any players actually in this transfer window?) to come or to emerge through the youth ranks to play alongside the likes of Stones. Barkley and Lukaku.

I have seen it mentioned on more than one occasion that Everton will sell at 35m or thereabouts.
Secondly, there is also the suggestion that Everton are prepared to sell, a kind of subplot even though the club publicly says the player is not for sale.

Everton have played hardball with this Chelsea bid and have played it well.
Chelsea by now understand very well that Everton are not going to be bullied into a cheap sale. It appears they have added 10m to the original bid and that has been rejected just like the other two.

Chelsea knew the bid of 30m was going to be rejected, but if they knew a bid of 35 would be accepted the transfer would be going through by now.
I think the truth is that Chelsea really do not know what Evertons real intentions are and are adding incremental bids to see if the Everton stance weakens or changes.
The suggestion that 35m is the magic figure makes no sense , it is based on nothing other than opinon.

it doesnt make any sense to sell now.

we've had big money in and spent [Poor language removed] all so hopefully that means Bill's got Barclay's off his back for a bit.

We won't be able to sign a player anywhere near as good and it's unlikely we'll see a centre half like that for some while

He is 21 and his value is only going to go up.

...

if he has a blinder of a season and stars for england at euros and barca come calling with a 50mil bid, then best of luck to the lad. swerve selling to chelsea though

John Stones: Everton defender not for sale despite '£30m Chelsea bid'

Everton will resist Chelsea's attempts to sign John Stones by maintaining that the England defender is not for sale.

The Toffees are refusing to comment on claims they have received and rejected a third offer of £30m from the Premier League champions for the 21-year-old.

Bids of £20m and £26m have already been rejected by Everton.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is determined to strengthen his central defence after substituting John Terry during the 3-0 loss at Manchester City.

Everton's position, voiced publicly by manager Roberto Martinez, has been unmoved and they are determined to stand firm even as reports emerge that a third bid of £30m has now been lodged.

Mourinho and Chelsea must now decide whether to make further efforts to secure Stones but it would take a major reversal in Everton's policy for any potential deal to proceed.
