John Stones transfer saga

The latest thing from the media now seems to be, "Awww, come on Everton, see sense. You can't hold on to Stones, you should be made to sell him to a 'bigger club'. Look, Southampton did it and they're alright, You should do the same!"

Seen a couple of different articles adopting this sort of utterly patronising tone.

I've said before, its as though we're the bad guys in this for wanting loads of money from a side who spent £50million on a finished Fernando Torres.

We should just send him down their for free.

Matt Law with his ~20th article saying Chelsea are confident of getting Stones.

Having so far signed Asmir Begovic and Radamel Falcao this summer, Chelsea will complete the signing of left-back Baba Rahman and Mourinho has turned up the pressure on his board to pay big money to take central defender John Stones from Everton.

Ironically, the storm surrounding Mourinho’s demotion of Carneiro and Fearn from the Chelsea bench has held up the club’s third £30million bid for Stones but that will be made imminently. Everton are expected to reject the £30m offer for Stones, but Mourinho believes Chelsea have the capacity to go even higher to get their man.

“Chelsea is Chelsea and Mr Abramovich is Mr Abramovich,” said Mourinho. “The board has worked so well, over the years, in making money with sales that if somebody has the right - the moral right – to do that (spend big money), then I say that Chelsea is one of them. Because Chelsea is making so much money selling and sometimes people forget. “You look even to players who were not in the Chelsea squad this season, who we sell –Kakuta to Sevilla for a few million, you sell Romeu to Southampton for some more millions. You sell another player to another club for £5m. Even when you are not speaking about David Luiz, Filipe Luis, even when you are not speaking about the top players we sell, you just look at the players who are a little bit under the radar and Chelsea makes money.

“So if one day Chelsea wants to make a very important buy I think Chelsea has economic conditions for that and also moral conditions for that.”

John Stones is expected to join Chelsea this summer

As Premier League champions, Mourinho knows his team are effectively under attack from City, United, Arsenal and Liverpool. No club, including City, has retained the title since 2009 and, having seen all of his rivals spend money to try to close the gap between themselves and Chelsea, Mourinho clearly feels he needs greater competition for places.

Looks like Mourinho was quite happy to chat about other things than his medical staff at his press conference...

Mourinho is confident that Chelsea will add two players to the squad before the transfer window closes at the end of the month – suggesting his club have earned the “moral right” to make big signings in the future – yet the Portuguese says it is up to the existing members of his side to improve in the face of big spending elsewhere.
...
On potential incomings, he said: “If we have one new player or a couple of new players, [it’s] welcome. Yes, it’s a possibility. The market is open and you know that a defender we are going to do for sure.”

Chelsea fear both Manchester clubs are secretly plotting moves to snatch John Stones from under their noses. The Barclays Premier League champions are pursuing the England defender having already had two offers rejected by Everton. Jose Mourinho is set to return with a third offer in the region of £30million before the transfer deadline, despite Roberto Martinez's insistence that Stones is not available at any price.

Chelsea are confident of swiftly agreeing personal terms with the centre-back, believing Stones wants to join. However, there is growing concern at Stamford Bridge that they will not have a clear run at the former Barnsley man.

Members of the Blues hierarchy believe City and United will table their own offers for Stones, if and when the Toffees accept a bid from them. It has been indicated to Blues chiefs that their Premier League rivals are merely waiting to see if Everton can be convinced into selling their star defender before making moves of their own. Sources claim City were plotting a similar tactic with United target Sergio Ramos. Stones' future looks likely to be a pertinent issue during the closing days of the transfer window, with Chelsea fearing a late twist in the protracted saga.

Pure newspaper trash!

I hope City smash Chelski tomorrow to turn the heat on Mourinho. I normally don't mind them but the media are up that manager and clubs backsides this summer.

The arrogant sod coming out with that. Don't like the sound of it.

Wish this was over but unfortunately it isn't.

Even though Martinez has made it clear Stones is not for sale at any price it will still not stop the like of Chelski, City and Utd from making bids for him. It totally winds me up No should be No and that should be the end of it......I hate the transfer window

I'm not worried because Martinez will look an absolute fool if we wind up selling him now, after being some vehement about not selling him. He has to be supremely confident that the club aren't selling him, given his very public stance.

I really don't think he'd put his credibility on the line to such a degree if there was a chance he was going. He'd give a wishy washy answer and not be so certain.

The simple fact that we only have 2 first team central defenders in Jags and Stones shows that we can't sell him now even if we wanted to.

People can point to the papers and go 'there's no smoke without fire' but as the McCarthy/Mirallas/Baines/Coleman sagas illustrated, journalists increasingly know absolutely nothing about Everton and have no sources at the club.
