McCarthy and Mirallas Sign New Deals

So we should have sold them or simply let their contracts rundown?

Also our squad isn't "thin" we've got 22 first team players with talented youngsters also pushing for a place.

We have 22. Very true in a factual/numerical sense. After all, you only need 11 to play every week.

However, we have Hibbo. Normally injured and is rubbish when he actually plays.
Down to 21.

We have peinar and gibson. Good players when fit, but now both injured and in the last years of their contracts. Mate, their finished and they ain't coming back.
Down to 19 (18 needed for a full match day squad).

We have McGeady and Kone. Just not good enough. If you offered me selling them both on a free I'd happily accept just because of the wages it would free up.
Down to 17.

Naismith. Love the effort but not going to do anything to move us in a positive direction. This week toffee tv described him as "a poor man's Tim Cahill". I agree with this statement.
Not quite down to 16 but you see where I'm going. Howard, osman, barry, Joel etc...

I'm not thrilled about the lack of reinforcements at centre back / forward, but if these two do actually re-sign, you have to applaud the efforts of the board to keep them. Garbutt could have walked away for free and gotten loaned out from one of the Champions League clubs, but he chose to stay with us. Mirallas only has a year left on his contract and if he ran it down, I'm sure a Champions League club would take him on a free transfer. McCarthy's link to spurs... well that's a less attractive proposition to turn down but all the same it's crucial that we get him to sign on again.

The optimist in me thinks that it's possible the players really do believe in the system that we have in place, and that they're possibly thinking about the squad that's being carefully built and what it could achieve a couple years down the road. The pessimist in me is delightfully silent atm :)

I've got their families in my shed. wont let them out til they sign. Hope they hurry up as I need to put the BBQ away.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Koff El Fraudo

Wait, what ?!

Positive news ? Im not used to this. Have to take my boo'ing to the reserves in southport or something.

My god you're right, what am I thinking!! We'd be lucky to finish mid table of the conference league. I can't believe Richard Scudamore hasn't had us removed from the league and quarantined like some sort of Ebola patient.

means to an end old bean...you should know that better than anyone meanwhile
Indeed it fill,s an empty news cycle. An old playbook but does the trick with the fanbase.
Club happy as they can increase the transfer sale value price of the players.
Players happy as they get more dough.
Manager hung out to dry as it detracts from the real issues of the thin squad - still he signed his multi-million pound contract

Just seen this on here and that is fantastic news, 2 of our top three or four players.

McCarthy is a Rolls Royce of a midfielder and Mirallas is a game changer.

Brilliant brilliant news.

"The situation is James is not going anywhere," said Martinez.

"If there are reports of a possible sale, then I can guarantee that is not going to happen because he's a player we want to build our future around."

That is how you make it absolutely clear that a player is staying and is not for sale. Would like to hear similar words about Stones but not holding my breath.
Imo there is a difference between James and John though, good as McCarthy is I don't think he'll get to the very peak of the profession and play for say Barcelona, whereas if Stones does fulfill his potential (a big ask) I genuinely think he could.

I'm hopeful we'll keep John this season but somewhat resigned to the likelihood the offers will be too big sometime in the near future for us to turn down. Whereas McCarthy could well be an Everton player for years to come and an excellent one at that.

Come on though, Viennablue does have a point. Our squad is threadbare in terms of players who are actually any good, or aren't injured most of the time.

Players who are actually any use to us (i.e. who are mostly fit and decent players):

Howard
Joel
Coleman
Browning
Stones
Jagielka
Baines
Oviedo
Barry
McCarthy
Besic
Cleverley
Mirallas
Deulofeu
Osman
Barkley
Lukaku

17 players. It's very worrying indeed.

You seem to be forgetting we also just signed the new Riquelme on loan

Agree with all that Legs but just pointing out the difference in clarity between the 2 positions. I'm not blaming Martinez for that btw as he looks and sounds like a manager who has just been given some very bad news by his chairman.

Anyway the good news is that McCarthy is deffo not leaving which is something to be happy about.
