Everton Youth Teams Thread

dowell is quite tall so if he fills out as you'd expect over the next 2-3 yrs he could be quite an imposing presence too.

Yes he has continued to grow over the last couple of years. When I first saw him he was quite a slight small lad. I am not sure he will ever fill out too much though, nor will he have Barkleys build, but he can certainly get stronger over time.

The other day by accident I came across a refence to Ryan Harrington, Welsh first year Scholar, leaving his school a couple of years ago to go to a school inwhat i thought was Wigan as part of his Everton commitments. Then today , again by accident , I read a full article of a parent complaining her child couldn't get into Wade Deacon School Widnes because Everton were taking up "56 places " I guess it was Widnes Harrington went to . It seems we have a Service Agreement with the school to provide something like 11 places per year , which according to the school doesn't affect their numbers of other pupils. That's an interesting development which I wasn't aware of.

Tim Cahill picked Dowell out his one to watch a few years ago. Given he is only 17 now he can only have been about 14 when Cahill said that.

From the very little I have seen of Dowell (yesterday was the first time iv seen him for over 30 minutes) he reminded me a lot of Steve McManaman

love this thread, so so interesting. bit gutted i missed seeing the game last night, sounded like it would have been a great watch.

loving the contributions, especially those of @catcherintherye - but surely this is all too good to be true regarding numbers? Are some of these youngsters possibly being overrated by our coaches? we seem to have an absolute mass of numbers of players who could make the grade. as we all know you get talented players who don't make the grade and can still make it as championship level/lower prem level - but i'm really looking forward to where we can get in a few years time, especially with the amount of young stars we have in the first team at the moment already.

I was told that the club pretty much stalked Dowell during his final year at school.
They took picked him up and got him to training most days; he was able to sit his exams at seperate times as he had fixtures/training for the club. Everton gave his school brand new set of laptop's and PC's to 'smooth' any difficulties. He was able to miss the odd lesson; Everton threw money at the school big time. Paid for teachers to go in at the weekend and help him revise/watch over his exam.

They have sorted his parents out as well big time.

I suspect they have huge hopes for the boy.

very interesting. this reminds me a lot of how barca looked after and developed messi personally all the way through childhood - here's hoping he can make a similar progression and if he does here's hoping that he'll show similar loyalty.

We won the U18 league in 2014 and were within a game of winning it last year as well which would suggest that there is cold hard data to back up the optimism.

The unfortunate reality is that the odds are against a large crop making it to being regulars into our first team - injuries, attitude changes etc. and the game itself has got even more competitive than when the Utd class of '92 broke through. But there are certainly encouraging signs so personally just going to enjoy it for the moment and see how things pan out without trying to set too many expectations into the future.

An article from the Echo about what Martinez should do with Dowell. Basically they seem to think that the football league won't give Dowell as much responsibility as Martinez wants him to have because he's a creative player and not a physical one. It suggests the Segunda Division in Spain as an alternative.

Personally think that would be a bad idea. I know these players could develop somewhere like Spain's second division but I would argue is it wise to plop a 17-year old growing/maturing lad in a foreign country for a year? I feel it may be too much, too soon.

....I don't think it's one size fits all, the coaches will know what each player needs and which are more likely than others to come through.
