Everton Youth Teams Thread

People like Harry Charsley, Joe Williams and Conor Grant I just don't see making it with us sadly.. Hope I'm wrong

I think you are correct unfortunately. Grant now has a number of young midfielders in years below him who have better potential than him. Charsley hasn't kicked on and made himself a regular feature of the reserves and Williams has played well but again hasn't made himself ahead of say Ledson etc. I imagine all 3 will have careers in the game as pro's.

Again without trying to sound harsh, as I have just said on the Chris Long thread, Grant went on loan to Motherwell and was not a first team regular there. If you want to have a career in the first team at Everton you have to really shine at clubs like Motherwell. He is not going to displace the likes of McCarthy, Barry, Barkley if you can't hold down a place at Motherwell.

I really like Joe Williams. I think it was after he won that academy award and did an interview saying what a big Everton fan he is and how he won't give up until he's in the first team, made me really want him to succeed. Our academy is stacked with quality midfielders though, which makes it a bit more difficult for him.
Williams is a good un. I think he has more to his game than Ledson, or at least he shows more of it. Ledson to me always seems to be playing well within himself.

To be honest I've only seen Williams and ledson once
And wasn't that impressed with Williams

Ledson sat infront of the back 4 so
Didn't really have to do a lot in the game
But in the 4/5 times he went forward he seemed to have much more purpose to his play than Williams

Yeah I couldn't agree more.. I think Joe Williams problem is people like Liam Walsh and Tom Davies are coming up behind him and especially Walsh has far more to his game and is getting better all the time.. I know a lot of people who feel Liam Walsh will become a better player than Ledson which is exciting because I really like Ledson even though maybe he doesn't always do the spectacular.. I have high hopes for Ledson, Walsh and Dowell

Anyone know what positions Dowell and McAleny are being prepared for? I know McAleny was supposed to be a striker but he's played attacking mid for us and Cardiff.

Some of the new under 18's player profiles have been added on the OS today, looks like 2/3 of them that signed this year have been at other clubs academies and quite a few of them unlike the last couple of years are not from Merseyside, not that it maters really but it's definately a different demographic than previous years.

Also noticed that some of them are wearing squad numbers, high numbers like 67 and 73, so it looks like we're giving a number to every player at the club, which again is different.

Dowell was like watching a young Barkley when he still had the confidence to try stuff before successive managers beat it out of him.

Couldn't be more different imo.

Barkley was more comparable to Rooney in that he was close to unstoppable when he got in to full speed running at defenders, Dowell is far more technical and in the least offensive way he is thinking the game through before it happens unlike Barkley who tends to get into a situation then need to think about whats next.

Barkley was and always will be best when head down and driving forward, Dowell from what we have seen so far will always be best when hes given the ball and allowed to commit defenders and spot a pass

....I picked Williams out 18months ago after seeing him really combative up against Anderson when the kids played Manchester United. He has something about him. Ledson has more obvious quality and pedigree. He was a real leader on the pitch when Young England won the Euro's and he was a stand out in the big U21 games last season. His display against the Reds was outstanding in all aspects of the game. He certainly didn't play within himself that day.

.......I keep saying it's a massive step up but perhaps the most encouraging aspect of pre-season is that a number of our youngsters look comfortable playing with established top flight players in open age football. Ok it's not yet Premier League but the signs are good.

Although they are in competition with each other (for contracts), i like the fact that our junior teams have a competitive mentality where they appear to support their mates. I'm sure that is helping the transition and the signs are good.
