Exactly. I reckon that we probably have around £10-12mil left to play with. We need a playmaker and a centre half, so it seems likely that Kev could be sold to enable us to fund a playmaker, a decent centre half back up, plus a winger to fill Kev's boots if he leaves.

So you don't want another winger i.e. Lennon. Just a playmaker.

Both him and Deulofeu are more known to play on the right. Do you not think Mertens would be better?

He's more highly rated and he's also a hard worker.

I think if we signed Mertens (or the playmaker), and sold Kev, we'll then go and get Lennon.

We'd then have 3 reliable wingers in Mertens, Lennon and Del, plus viable back ups in Pienaar and Osman and, at a push, Cleverley.

With no european competition I think that would be more than enough.

Can't believe Victor Moses hasn't been mentioned. Martinez is a known admirer, he's back at Chelsea and apparently doesn't want to go to Stoke. If Mirallas goes then he'll be linked. Had a decent season at Soke to be fair but he's no Shaqiri or Mertens

Why travails?

If Mertens is being targeted, it'll be as the playmaker in my opinion. Yes he's quick, but he's not a sprinter like Del, Kev or Lennon. He uses his pace to get a half yard on his opponents and find a little pass or a shooting opportunity. A playmaker does not have to play in a central position - Silva hardly ever does. Barkley will keep that spot behind Rom for the time being. If we signed Mertens, he'd be ideal for that left side. Del and Mirallas/Lennon could then be our options for the right. With Pienaar and Osman in back up.

Yeh I think we'll get a CB and, potentially, this 'No.10', in before the start of the season. Anything else will depend on sales an will probably be left til' the last minute.

I think that will leave us short if we get injuries and I don't fancy Ross at ACM against certain teams.

I would say it's a given that VVD will leave Celtic to the prem and I honestly believe we would likely be the most attractive option. It's just whether we are interested in him or not that is the question.

agreed. Any significant transfer (money-wise) depends on a sale first. Our financials limit RM to another 10-15 mio quid (max) this window. And before everybody yells "what about the McGeady money Bill"?, I suggest 750,000 pence doesn't buy you much footballing talent (as Celtic will shortly find out)

So after all that we are looking at.

Holding midfield/centre midfield:
- Barry
- Besic
- McCarthy
- Cleverley
- Barkley (will probably see some match time at a deeper position this season)

Attacking midfield:
- Barkley
- Cleverley
- Deuloefu
- Mertens

Wingers (or players who can play there at least:
- Deuloefu
- Cleverley
- Mertens

An injury to either Deulofeu or Mertens has us playing Cleverly on the wing or changing formation. We also don't really have a great formation to counteract teams that park the bus.

But you are probably right. The tight-asses who run the club probably think that will do.
