tell me something about Labone

His brother runs a cleaning company that used to service my work place. Had some good long Everton chats with Brians nephew Simon.

He well deserved the sobriquet Harry Catterick gave him..... The Last of the Corinthians. Labby was a class act as a player and a man and epitomised Everton at its best. What an Evertonian....I was blessed to see him play.

Only booked twice in an awesome long time as a blues centre half, pure class great in the air played the ball out of defence with aplomb - would have played in the 1966 England team, but stood down to get married, His partnership with John Hurst was unbelievable to see -two playmakers at the back also a real Evertonian stating he hated eating tomatoes as they were red!
He had many famous sayings abut the other lot over the park, when he retired , Manager Catterick stated "Last of the Corithians"
I seen him play in two championship teams one of the classiest centre halfs you could wish to see!

All true mate, also named his racehorse Goodison. Says it all really.

Everton through and through.

We lost the 1971 FA Cup semi final at Old Trafford because he was injured and didn't come out for the second half. Liverpool would not have won that game if he had played the full 90.

And was a member of the best England side ever to play the game - Mexico 1970.

The best at his position to play for Everton and he has some serious competition there in Ratcliffe

World class. Fantastic defender, classy footballer and, by all accounts a real gentleman. Pulled out of the 1966 World Cup squad to get married, would you believe. He was first choice alongside Bobby Moore in a very strong England team at the 1970 World Cup.

Also, an Evertonian through and through. He once coined the phrase, "One Evertonian is worth twenty kopites!"

The term legend is perhaps sometimes over-used, but no one who saw him play would argue that Brian Labone is a true Everton legend.

That Corinthian quote...Could someone break it to me. Bibble related?
A major pillar of a team - Corinthians famous for strong architecture pillars etc so yes maybe biblical!
When the going got tough Labone led by example - My older brother was ten now 67 saw him mark the great Tom Finney out of the game, as he played as a makeshift centre forward never gave Finney a kick of the ball! as a young teenager marking a top England forward!
- Dave Hickson stated pre season the reserves played the first team and this lad called Labone marked him, and thought straight away what a great centre half he was going to be - never a doubt in his mind proved out to be spot on!
