How close can we get to 50 points this season?

Our back five is solid. Baines and Coleman have picked up major form and Stones is just the perfect centre back partner for Jagielka. Even Howard has looked superb the last few months. Keep that together for next season and, with no European hangovers to worry about, we can have a chance of top four or five easily (long as we keep Kaks).

Please don't call him "Kaks", mate.

The fear of him doing a Wigan with us was a major part of that questioning. Hopefully this run nails that particular concern and there'll be no massive kneejerk next season if we find ourselves midtable in September/October...although I'm sure there's plenty who will kneejerk.

I can't see us being midtable at that point. I'd like to believe we'll have a good preseason this time and start the season how we've finished.

Of course I'd love us to be challenging for te European spots every season (champs league would be great), but one of my concerns after this season is what effect will this have on us in the future?

For example, say we have another good season next year and qualify for Europe again. I hope we don't have another blip, like this season, and finish mid table again.

Not saying this will happen again, but it mightunless we address this and learn from this season's mistakes now.

It goes without saying that it's counterproductive to finish in the euro places if it negatively affects the league position the year after.

A good finish to this season, good signings and sensible releases, with a decent pre season should see an improvement next season.

Alan Shearer made a good point last night about the number of games and layout of the EL compared with the CL. I agreed with him for once.

Winning now when the games don't matter is nice but I wouldn't say those questions have been answered unless we carry this form over to next season.

Each place is worth around 2m quid. Every game matters and the manager knows it.

I wondered whether he could turn it around when the players heads had dropped. More to do with his demeanour than anything at Wigan, a club who've found it's level.

We'll play Villa the way we played Man Utd. Puts all the pressure on a poor defence. We should win there.

Definitely. They'll have to try and win, it's an easier job defensively and they're not the quickest side in defence. Same line-up, maybe with Mirallas in for Osman and same again, please.

I think the tipping point comes along once you've qualified two or three years on the trot - prospective signings start looking at the club as a regular participant in Europe and that makes the club more attractive to a better quality of player. For instance, I don't think Lukaku would have signed for us permanently if we hadn't qualified for the EL during his loan season with us.

I don't really care about the difference between 8th and 15th that much myself.

But, as well as the money, if we finish well it might mean players who would otherwise look for an exit stick around. If we do go on a run up the league, that might show them that there's hope for next year in a way the campaign puttering out doesn't.

That's my point, though. Unless we learn our lesson from this season, my fear is that we'll just repeat it again.

If competing in Europe means our league performances dip, we won't qualify for Europe every year
