Quite beautifully the lasting memories of Gerrard' career will be of the failures as well as success. That "night in Istanbul" has long been buried under being the captain who slipped the best change of a league title away and then got sent off for being a tit- a la Zidane - in a high profile game.

Should have took the transfer to Chelsea when you could Stevie lar. The greats win league titles lid, even at least one of them.

Yep, just need the tits to be knocked out of the fa cup to ensure no fairytale ending and that will do me. Ever since the end of last season he's had a torrid run of form to the point where he struggles to get into a midfield of Henderson, Allen and Lucas. Get knocked out of the cup and he will barely get any game time these last few games

Cost them the league last season and has now cost them any chance of CL football next season, too.

A fitting end, given his propensity for falling over on purpose over the years.

Will they still be top of that referee respect league after that?

Looks like Stampy G has lost them that one too.

By the way he really should become a DJ after he retires, so many great names he can use. Although I hear he's already had a dabble in that field.

Should know today,if the skull is going to get his deserts from the F A. ?

I wouldn't bank on it to be honest, the media have ignored it because they've been wrapped up so much in Gerrard's groundbreaking public apology. There's nothing in any of mainstream sites and I don't recall even LVG making anything out of it (?). Gerrards slight of hand has taken the heat out of Skrtel's equally aberrant, deliberate and dangerous stamp but it looks like a public apology from the former England captain and media darling is enough contrition for the FA to gloss over Skrtel's actions.

Piss poor really.

Don't be too sure Dougie. As long as the ref in his report says he didn't see anything and if he had seen it he would have sent him off then retrospective action will be taken. No chance is the ugly bellend getting away with that after the shyt storm they kicked up over Costas tackle on them.

“I’ve got to accept it,” Gerrard said in an interview with Sky Sports. “I’ve let my team-mates, my manager and more importantly the supporters down. I think I’ve tried to avoid [Herrera’s] tackle and I’ve reacted when I’ve seen his studs showing, but I’ve been in the game long enough to know [what happens] when you do that. We had 45 minutes to play and a great opportunity to get back into the game. I’ve reacted to the initial tackle, but I don’t want to say too much more. I wanted to apologise to the supporters. I take full responsibility for the result.”

The egotistical bully attempting damage limitation in a vanity interview. Eleven "I"s in a four line quote. He obviously thinks Herrera nevertheless deserved the stamp as hes about the only one apart from Pele' that he didn't apologise to...then again the press say the Brazilian legend had pi*sed off by half time so missed it anyway. I like the way Carragher tries to justify Gerrard's recklessness implicating Rodgers recent decisions to have him on the bench as a causative reason for his childish psycho retribution once he got on the pitch.
I like this recent online comment under Oliver Kay's piece on Gerrard in today's Times, from a Chelsea supporter.

'Blue Is The Colour'
'Special things like three red cards in his last season, poor tackling, at least 2 mistakes that led directly to goals against LFC and numerous poor passes that meant goes weren't scored for LFC (same with a few of the tackles, no possession no goal). Then there's that infamous incident against us last season. Funny thing about that is the miscontrol which people seem to forget led directly to him then scrabbling to get the ball and slipping last season to let slip LFC's title ambitions. He's not just losing his balance but his touch too. Along with the red cards which were his fault he's also had the hugely unsatisfactory position of being on the bench in Madrid in probably the last epic European game of his career which wasn't.

Sad, sad way to go, even for the scouser. In many ways if i was him i'd find the least palatable thing, and it would be something i'd definitely not do, is him going to play in America and therefore completely shatter his whole one team man legacy.

......specifically being covered on the Sky News sports bulletin. I think Brendan was specifically asked about it at his conference but didn't hear the response. If you look at the incident, Skyrtel is looking at the keeper ahead of the stamp. Not nice. They were up in arms over Costa, very difficult for them to argue differently now.
