We're not in a posistion to offer 1yr deals to players like barry as our wage cap is lower than other teams. It's clearly a ploy we use to even up the cash on offer to tie a player down.

ie arsenal offer him 80k a week for a year or two....
Everton offer 50K over 3/4yrs or more or whatever....

But in theroy I get your point. After 32 1yr deals should be standard. In practical we can't take that stance without loosing out on players...
 
One year contracts keep players hungry. You never know when form is gonna drop off the cliff but ar least at the end of the season we can release Distin, we are stuck with Howard and Barry for the next 3 and 2 seasons respectively.
 
Just watching the NBC special on Martinez and they have been playing clips of our games, mostly last years as they wanted to show us winning!

Those including Distin have made me a bit sad tbh, he was so good last year and despite the odd howler has been a fantastic player for us. Such a shame about his loss of form this season and even more so the apparent behind the scenes issues.
 

Cracking piece of business on reflection, I nearly cried when I saw we had paid 5m for him, his first few games he played like a cow on rollerskates, but im sure MOST would agree that this season apart, he has been on the main a cracking player for us.

Age catches up with us all in the end sadly and hes defo blotted his copybook recently if the rumours are to be believed, shame, but we go on, hopefully he gets himself a little year elsewhere, hes still got something to offer, just not at Premiership level sadly.

It is a real shame, i wish the side was healthy enough so we didn't need him to play, or the squad deep enough that him leaving on a high note would of been the best option all around. His legs no can longer do it at this level but we have been in situations when we have needed to call on him to play.

Bargain signing who didn't let us down and gave us all he had while he still had it.

Great signing at the time and we got more than our moneys worth

Distin's form has not "dropped off the cliff". It does not happen that quickly. I think his poor form is more due to his differences with Martinez, stemming from his opinions of the manager's tactics and his reluctance to adapt to them. Sorry to lay more blame at Martinez' door, but this is one of the things that have gone wrong on his watch.
 
Rightly or wrongly, Distin has received a lot of stick this season for one reason or another and I sincerely doubt he'll play for us again.

Yet as others have mentioned, overall he has been a pretty fantastic signing who has been a pivotal component of our once heralded defence.

Hopefully the last couple of months doesn't overshadow his overall contribution.
